Kentucky Abandoned Dog Endures Days Alone In Thick Bush Until Neighbor Notices Him

It’s hard to truly grasp what abandoned dogs must feel when they realize the people they trusted most have walked away from them.

Unfortunately, some pets still face harsh treatment from owners who leave them behind without hesitation, exposing them to danger and uncertainty.

One dog in Kentucky endured exactly that kind of pain when his owners tied him to a tree and concealed him within a dense bush. For three long days, he stayed there, holding onto hope that someone would return for him. Slowly, the reality of being left behind began to settle in.

A Neighbor Takes Action

Locals soon took notice of the dog, later named Dubya, hiding in the bush.

It was clear that no one had checked on him in days, prompting a concerned neighbor to call Louisville Metro Animal Services to report the situation.

The caller had mentioned that Dubya appeared to be aggressive, but when the officer arrived, she found a very different story. The pup was friendly and eager to interact.

He had been tied up with a short rope, and an empty pink food bowl was left beside him. The officer quickly cut the rope, setting him free at last.

As soon as Dubya realized he was no longer tethered, his tail wagged with joy. He looked up at his rescuer with a cross-eyed gaze that seemed to express his immense gratitude.

He was transported to Metro Animal Services, where he underwent an exam.

Despite the three days alone in the bush, he was in surprisingly good condition, with only a few bug bites to speak of.

Staff estimated his age at around three years and began treating him for entropion, a condition where the eyelids roll inward, causing excessive tearing.

No one came forward to claim Dubya, and there was no microchip found on him.

Once the shelter shared Dubya’s story on Facebook, many expressed relief that he was safe. However, others were upset that it had taken three days before anyone reported the situation.

“We definitely do not recommend waiting [that long]. If you see a dog tied to something with no one around, we would recommend calling animal control. Even if the dog doesn’t seem in distress, things can change really quickly,” said Stephanie Jackson, public information officer at Metro Animal Services, in an interview with The Dodo.

A New Beginning

Despite his rough start, Dubya remained cheerful and affectionate. His playful and loving personality quickly won over the shelter staff and volunteers.

“He is very, very, very goofy and affectionate,” Jackson said.

With his lively spirit and love for activities, it was clear that Dubya would thrive in a home where he could get the attention and love he deserved.

On June 13, 2025, the Louisville shelter shared the best possible news on social media: Dubya had found his forever family.
