Days Of Searching
In Utah, a woman living with dementia took her dog into nature one day, but no one saw her leave. When her family realized she was missing, panic set in.
Her husband and loved ones searched frantically but soon knew they needed help. They rushed to the sheriff’s office and reported that she had disappeared.
The officers wasted no time. A search and rescue mission was launched with the Utah Department of Natural Resources.
More hands were brought in, including Officer James Thomas and his K9 partner, Kip.
He told GeoBeats Animals: “We ended up spending the rest of that night looking, so this would be night two. The temperatures that day probably were around hundred. At night, they would drop down pretty cool, probably around 50, 60 degrees.”

When they finally discovered the woman, her faithful dog was sitting firmly by her side, growling to keep strangers away. He wasn’t going to let anyone near until he knew his owner was safe.
A Dog’s Unwavering Loyalty
Despite being exhausted and hungry, the dog never abandoned her. For days, he stayed in the wilderness, guarding his owner and keeping danger at bay.

The team later determined that she had been staying in warmer areas of the forest where water was nearby, which is what helped her and her dog survive those long days.
James said: “Without her dog being with her, it could have been a completely different story. We would’ve kept looking and looking for her, but the amount of time it took us, it could have been longer without the dog barking throughout the night and giving us an idea where to look.”
At last, she was safely reunited with her family, thanks to the tireless work of rescuers and the devotion of one extraordinary dog.
