For many dogs, regular grooming is the key to staying both happy and healthy. Warm baths, trimmed nails, clean ears, and a shiny coat make a world of difference, especially for pups with long, thick fur.
But sadly, not every dog gets that chance. Some go months, even years, without so much as a brush, their fur tangling into heavy mats that weigh them down.
One little stray, later named Panda, knew this struggle all too well. His coat hadn’t been cared for in over a year, leaving him dirty, uncomfortable, and completely matted.
Helping Panda
Panda arrived as a stray to the Annenberg PetSpace, a Los Angeles-based center devoted to strengthening the human-animal bond through adoption.
The moment he came in, it was clear he was in desperate need of help. His fur was one solid mat, tangled beyond recognition.
“He very much smelled like a barnyard when we put him in the back of our vehicle. We really just wanted to give him a moment to decompress,” Catie told The Dodo.
Once Panda started to trust the staff, they set to work. The first step was shaving away the mats that had taken over his tiny body.
To give Panda the care he needed, the team brought him to Los Angeles dog groomer Mario J Martin.
Mario worked carefully, shaving millimeter by millimeter to free Panda from the mats that had been trapping him.
Through it all, Panda proved himself to be the sweetest pup. He stayed calm, almost as though he understood that the grooming was his path to a better life.
“You couldn’t tell where his tiny, little ears stopped and where the fur continued to go,” she added.
At last, after hours of snipping and shaving, a mountain of filthy mats lay on the floor. Beneath it all stood a small, bright-eyed puppy, finally free and looking like the handsome boy he always was.
With his new appearance, Panda was ready to begin the next chapter of his life and find a family.
A New Life Begins
One day, while scrolling on her phone, a woman named Kitty came across a video of Panda’s transformation. The moment she saw him, she felt an instant connection.
“The one main thing going through my head was, ‘I hope he likes me’,” said Kitty.
Her worries disappeared the second Panda bounded toward her and her partner, showering them with play and affection.
It was love at first sight, and Kitty knew she couldn’t leave without him. Panda had found his forever home.
And, just like that, Panda was adopted!
Now, Panda spends his days surrounded by love. He rides happily in the car, wags his tail nonstop, and follows his family everywhere.
Panda’s transformation from a neglected stray to a cherished companion is complete. His hard past is behind him, and his future is filled with joy.
“Every time I grab my purse, he is like ‘Where are we going? I am going too. Where are we going?’” she added.
A Puppy’s Happiness Restored

Panda is living proof that with care and compassion, a life can change completely. He is now healthy, adored, and most importantly, regularly groomed.
