Franky is a once-in-a-lifetime dog.

For his dad, Luke, their beautiful journey began almost 15 years ago during a time of immense uncertainty in Louisiana.

When Hurricane Gustav started to make landfall in the state, countless animals were suddenly displaced and in desperate need of help.

Watching the news from halfway across the country, Luke knew he had to do something to get at least one animal out of harm’s way.

Luke reached out to a local rescue group in New Orleans to see how he could offer his support.

While browsing their website, he stumbled upon a picture of a tiny, five- or six-pound dog.

The little fellow immediately captured Luke’s heart.

“I was like, I gotta get this guy,” Luke remembered of that fateful moment.

Arrangements were quickly made to bring the little dog to his new life.

Franky was put on a plane and flown all the way up to Ohio, where Luke was living at the time.

The moment they finally met at the airport is permanently etched into Luke’s memory.

“I remember picking him up and hugging him and kissing him and saying, ‘You’re home. I’m your daddy,'” Luke shared.

A Name That Fit Perfectly

When the rescue first took the tiny dog in, they named him “Playful.”

Luke already had the name Franky picked out, so he made the official switch when they became a family.

However, as the months passed, he realized the rescue workers had been absolutely right.

“A year later, I remember saying, I should never have changed his name because Playful was perfect,” Luke laughed, watching his dog’s boundless energy.

Helping A Brother Heal

Franky wasn’t just a blessing to Luke; he was a lifeline to his new canine brother, Dino.

Dino was another rescue who had lived on the streets for the first nine months of his life, leaving him deeply anxious.

Thanks to Franky’s vibrant energy and awesome spirit, Dino slowly began to come out of his shell.

Luke watched Dino make huge improvements over their ten years together, largely because he had Franky by his side.

As the years went by, the family moved to Houston, Texas, and Franky began to age.

About three years ago, Franky lost his hearing, possibly due to a mild mini-stroke.

The most heartbreaking part of his deafness was that Franky had always been a deep lover of music.

He used to wake up to Bach cello music and would come running from a dead sleep when Luke played Wagner’s “Ride of the Valkyries” for playtime.

Adjusting To A New Normal

Losing his hearing meant Franky had to rely on new ways to connect with his dad.

Because he can no longer hear Luke’s voice, he constantly seeks out physical contact for reassurance.

“If he doesn’t see me right away, he’s like, ‘Where’s dad?'” Luke explained.

Luke makes sure to always offer a gentle touch, giving his sweet senior boy the comfort and security he needs.

Despite his age and hearing loss, Franky’s love for people has only grown stronger.

Whenever they go for a walk, he insists on greeting every single person and dog they pass.

If Luke tries to keep walking, Franky gives him a look of utter betrayal.

“So, I’m trained,” Luke joked, often asking strangers to please pet his dog to keep Franky happy.

Celebrating A Wise Elder

Now almost 15 years old, Franky has developed the soulful look of a wise elder statesman.

His breed typically only lives 10 to 12 years, but a lifetime of long daily walks has kept him remarkably healthy.

For his upcoming birthday on July 5th, Luke plans to decorate the car and drive around the neighborhood so everyone can safely come by and pet him.

It is the perfect way to honor a dog who has spent his entire life bringing joy to others.

A Love That Lasts Forever

To this day, Luke still visits the spot in the Ohio airport where he first held Franky, soaking up the emotional memory.

He often finds himself hugging his sleeping dog, overwhelmed by how much the little rescue means to him.

“I don’t remember life before Franky, and I don’t want to imagine life without him,” Luke said softly.

No matter how much time passes, the tiny dog from Louisiana will always be his child, leaving a legacy of love that will last a lifetime.
