California Inmate Met A Terrified Shelter Dog, And Their Bond Changed The Course Of His Life

A young man sentenced to life in prison finds his humanity and a path to freedom through the love of a fearful rescue dog named Prada.

Every time he takes his dog out for a run today, he is reminded of where their journey began. Years ago, they used to run together behind the heavy walls of a prison.

Incarcerated at just 19 years old, he was initially sentenced to life without the possibility of parole. For the first ten years of his sentence, he admits he was completely lost and struggling to find his way.

Then, a fragile, terrified rescue dog in California walked into his life and changed everything.

The turning point arrived when he joined the Pawsitive Change Program.

The initiative pairs rescue dogs from overcrowded shelters with inmates, creating a unique environment where both can heal.

The ultimate goal of the program is simple but profound: to have the dogs and the inmates rehabilitate each other.

Despite joining the program, he had actually been scared of dogs his entire life.

When he was paired with a dog named Prada, their first interaction was incredibly tense. As he reached into her crate to try and get her out, the terrified dog bit him.

Instead of getting angry, he simply sat there for an hour, patiently waiting for her to come out on her own terms.

Learning Empathy Through Patience

Looking at the fragile animal, he began to imagine whatever terrible things she must have endured to make her so fearful of humans.

These dogs had all been abandoned or surrendered, and he found it natural to feel deeply empathetic toward them.

It was the first time in his life he couldn’t understand how anyone could harm an animal, which sparked a profound realization: “How can I harm another human being?”

Earning A Fragile Trust

At the beginning, their entire focus was on establishing a baseline of trust.

For the first two weeks, he took his time, slowly getting closer to Prada without pushing her boundaries. Gradually, she felt safe enough to eat right out of his hand.

Within a couple of months, her fear melted away, and she just wanted to be on his lap all the time.

The Gift Of Responsibility

Once they bonded, he took Prada everywhere with him, drawing curious looks from the other inmates who weren’t used to seeing animals in prison.

For someone incarcerated, the feeling of being trusted with a precious life was entirely foreign. “No one ever trusts you with anything,” he explained.

Being asked to be accountable for this dog became a powerful form of empowerment, reinforcing his self-confidence and building his sense of self-worth.

Passing The Ultimate Test

During the last six weeks of the program, the inmates worked tirelessly to help their dogs pass the Canine Good Citizen certification.

The dogs had to learn to sit in place, come when called, remain non-reactive around other dogs, and allow strangers to pet them.

For a dog like Prada, who started with severe trust issues, passing this test was a massive and emotional milestone.

After the dogs passed their CGC test, it was time to see them off to their forever homes.

Nobody liked that day, and as Prada left, he truly didn’t think he was ever going to see her again.

He continued his work, fostering another dog named Turbo, but he couldn’t let his previous companions go. Even though he didn’t know if he would ever go home, he convinced his family on the outside to adopt both Prada and Turbo.

A Miracle At The Parole Board

He participated in four rounds of the program, emerging from the experience as a fundamentally better person who questioned his past behavior and belief systems.

Then, a change in the law afforded him an unexpected opportunity to appear before the parole board.

Thanks to his profound personal growth, he was found “suitable” for release at his very first hearing.

Saved By The Dogs They Rescued

Walking out of prison as a free man, he was finally reunited with Prada and Turbo.

He realized that the dogs’ initial aggression and insecurity perfectly mirrored the feelings of many prisoners. By helping them heal, he had found his own cure.

“In a lot of ways, they kinda saved me,” he reflected. Today, he uses the lessons they taught him about his own value and capacity to help others as the driving force for everything he does.
