Beside the dog was a heartbreaking note. The message simply stated that he was a “good boy” and asked whoever found him to help him find a new home.
Beating the Summer Heat
Because he was a very big boy, his rescuer knew they had to be a little cautious when approaching him. However, those fears melted away instantly.
As soon as the dog saw his rescuer, his tail started wagging and his whole body began to wiggle. It was immediately obvious that despite his size, he was just a “big mush.”
Because it was peak summer, the rescuer was incredibly worried about the dog becoming dehydrated in the intense heat. They knew they had to get him off the streets immediately.
The gentle giant was taken straight to the rescuer’s home. There, he was finally given the fresh food and cold water he desperately needed.
Daily Visits and Unbreakable Bonds
While the rescuer wanted to do more, they simply weren’t in a position to foster a large dog at the time. It was a heartbreaking decision to bring him to the San Diego Humane Society.
But the rescuer refused to let the dog, now named Juniper, feel abandoned again. They made a promise to go visit him every single day.
Each time the rescuer walked into the shelter with treats, Juniper was absolutely thrilled. He was incredibly sweet, wiggling with joy and squishing himself against the kennel cage just to get some pets.
The rescuer knew they needed to set Juniper up for success. Their daily visits ensured the sweet dog never lost his loving spirit.
The Perfect Match
Thankfully, Juniper only had to stay in the shelter environment for a few short days. A foster home stepped up to take him in while they searched for his forever family.
It didn’t take long for the right people to notice him. A family from Los Angeles traveled down specifically to meet the big, goofy dog.
When they finally met, Juniper could not contain his excitement. The family quickly realized that his funny and goofy personality was the absolute best fit for their home.

While Juniper was settling into his new life, another dog was desperately waiting for a hero of his own. This little pup was found waiting patiently outside a Planet Fitness.
He looked incredibly scared as people walked by the gym. Yet, looking into his eyes, his rescuer could tell he was silently asking for help.
The rescuer didn’t hesitate to step in. Using one of their gym towels, they gently scooped up the frightened little dog.
Once he was safely wrapped in the towel, the rescuer placed the sweet baby in their car. He was finally safe, and his journey to a better life had just begun.
A Deep Sense of Relief
The rescuer brought the tiny dog straight home to get him settled. The transition from the noisy street to a quiet, safe house had an immediate effect.
Within just a few minutes of arriving, the exhausted dog was completely passed out. The stress of his ordeal had finally caught up with him.

Finding the Perfect Name
After taking him in, the rescuer checked for a microchip, but there wasn’t one. The little dog was officially theirs to care for, which meant he needed a name.
One of the rescuer’s troops at work had the perfect suggestion. Since the dog was found outside a Planet Fitness, they suggested naming him Pluto.
The name stuck, and Pluto quickly began to thrive. He even got to go on a special Petco run, where the little survivor had a wonderful time picking out his new things.
New Friends and Healing Bonds
Pluto didn’t just gain a loving human; he gained a vibrant new social life. He quickly made a new best friend—an adorable little pug.
The two dogs hit it off immediately, and Pluto’s rescuer even started scheduling evening playdates for the pair. Watching Pluto play and socialize was a beautiful reminder of how far he had come.
Reflecting on their journey together, Pluto’s rescuer realized it wasn’t just a one-way street. As they put it perfectly, “We just needed each other.”
A Bigger Purpose

The rescuer, who is still serving in the military and has been deployed multiple times, knows firsthand how important emotional support can be. They have friends dealing with PTSD who could greatly benefit from a dog like Pluto.
To test his potential, the rescuer took Pluto to the busy airport to see off a deploying troop. Despite the chaotic environment, the little dog did exceptionally well.
From waiting alone outside a gym to bringing comfort to military heroes, Pluto’s transformation is nothing short of incredible. Both he and Juniper prove that when we open our hearts to animals in need, they give us so much more in return.
