A day on the golf course is supposed to feel calm, not suddenly urgent.
That was what a few players expected at Fire Wheel Golf Course in Garland, Texas, until something moving near a nearby creek caught their attention.
Curious and uneasy, they stopped playing and went over to look.
Soon, they saw a dog stranded along the edge of Rowlett Creek. He was stuck in place, either unable to move or too frightened to try.
The golfers did not know how to reach him safely without risking anyone else. So they quickly called for help.
Working Together To Save A Life
Garland Animal Services (GAS) soon arrived at the scene, joined by firefighters from the Garland Fire Department (GFD).
“Rescue 8 was called out to help Animal Control reach a dog [who] appeared to be stranded on the bank of the creek at Fire Wheel Golf Course,” the fire department shared on Facebook..
One firefighter carefully entered the water and made his way toward the narrow bank where the frightened dog sat.
At first, the firefighter tried to encourage the dog to wade into the water, but the pup refused to budge. Realizing the dog was too scared, the firefighter changed tactics. He began gently petting and reassuring the animal until the dog finally relaxed.
His patience paid off. The firefighter was soon able to lift the dog into his arms and carry him safely back to shore.
The Garland Fire Department later posted a video of the dramatic rescue, which quickly gained attention and praise online.
A closer look revealed that the dog was wearing a collar with contact information, a sign that he belonged to someone nearby.
A Heartfelt Reunion
After scanning the collar, rescuers reached out to the dog’s owner, Joan Landry. When she heard the news, she could hardly believe it.
“This is my dog, Bubba,” Joan wrote in the Facebook comments. “We’ve been looking for him for two [plus] days!!”
The Sachse, Texas, community had been helping Joan search for Bubba ever since he disappeared.
“I was crying for [two] days, walking [the] neighborhood, and neighbors were watching for him, too!!” Joan added.
Bubba had escaped through an open gate four days earlier, and until that call, his owner had feared the worst.
Home Where He Belongs
When firefighters contacted Joan, she was overwhelmed with relief. She couldn’t help but wonder how Bubba had ended up in the creek in the first place.
“Just the idea that he was in the creek is still puzzling. Did he just jump in and go for a swim because it was a hot day?” Joan said in an interview with WFAA.
Whatever the reason, her happiness outweighed any remaining questions. Bubba was safe, healthy, and about to go home.
Their reunion was captured on camera by WFAA, showing Joan’s tears of joy as she embraced her dog once again.
It was a simple yet powerful reminder of how far people will go to help an animal in need, and how strong the bond between humans and their pets truly is.
