This Virginia Pup Fooled Everyone Into Thinking He Was A Golden Retriever

Sometimes you feel certain you know exactly who your dog is, and then one unexpected discovery turns that certainty upside down.

That is what happened to Kaylee Leslie, a Virginia dog owner who had always seen Goose as a Golden Retriever. He came to her from a rescue in Texas and quickly became the faithful, loving companion she adored.

Nothing about him seemed out of place at first. He looked the part so completely that she had no reason to question it.

Then curiosity stepped in. Kaylee decided to order a DNA test, and what it revealed left her stunned.

A Golden Illusion

Goose, affectionately dubbed the sweetest “Golden Deceiver,” had no idea he was causing such confusion.

To Leslie, he was always her golden boy, but his genetic makeup told an entirely different tale.

Doubts first appeared during a routine grooming appointment when a groomer pointed out something unusual: Goose had a black tongue, a characteristic often associated with Chow Chows.

“When I brought him in, the one girl said ‘Is he a pure Golden?’ To which I replied that since he’s a rescue we aren’t 100% certain but we are almost sure he’s at least 90% Golden from his looks/temperament,” Leslie explained in a Reddit post.

At first, Leslie didn’t think it mattered. Goose was exactly what she wanted: goofy, affectionate, gentle with strangers, and endlessly charming.

Yet eventually, curiosity got the better of her, and she sent off a DNA test.

The results showed that Goose wasn’t a Golden Retriever at all.

“This is Goose! Our golden deceiver who we totally thought was mostly Golden Retriever,” Leslie added in another post.

The Unexpected Blend

The results revealed a surprising mix: Goose carried German Shepherd, Beagle, Chow Chow, American Pit Bull Terrier, Labrador Retriever, and a mysterious “Supermutt” in his lineage.

Despite his golden coat and classic retriever looks, there was not a trace of Golden Retriever in his DNA.

Still A Perfect Companion

The revelation did not dampen Leslie’s affection. In her eyes, Goose remained the ideal family member.

“We’re so surprised! He’s the best. His personality is so golden too which added to our surprise,” she shared.

Goose is playful, loving, quick to learn tricks, and endlessly enthusiastic about outdoor adventures, often needing gentle persuasion to come back inside.

The DNA test may have upended expectations, but it changed nothing about the bond they share.

Golden Retriever or not, Goose remains, and always will be, his mom’s golden boy.
