Mention a Golden Retriever and most people picture the same thing right away, nonstop energy, wide open spaces, a dog tearing across a field, splashing into water, and showing off every clever trick in the book.
That lively image is a big part of why the breed is so loved.
But for one woman in Illinois, the Golden Retriever she brought home turned out to be nothing like the version she had expected. Instead of getting the usual high energy sidekick, she found herself living with a personality that caught everyone off guard.
A Very Different Kind Of Golden
When Kylie brought home her Golden Retriever, Oakley, she assumed she was adopting a dog who would thrive on outdoor adventures and nonstop activity. Very quickly, she discovered that Oakley’s hobbies were not typical for his breed.
He had the appearance of a classic Golden, complete with a warm golden coat and a sweet, friendly face. But instead of sprinting around or fetching toys, Oakley had one true love: the television.
Oakley’s favorite pastime is watching TV. He sits in front of the screen, growls until Kylie turns it on, and then settles on the couch like he is ready for his favorite show.
“When I thought I was getting a Golden Retriever but got an ipad kid that growls at the tv if I don’t turn it on for him,” Kylie joked in a TikTok video.
The video quickly blew up online, and countless dog owners chimed in with similar stories.
“My golden is the biggest iPad kid I know,” one commenter wrote.
“I swear lab does this until I turn her heated blanket on and the fan… and say get on the ‘big bed’,” another added.
“My Goldendoodle has his own tablet,” a third person admitted.
Oakley seems happy with just about any show, from wildlife programs to random series. But he definitely has a preference. Disney movies are his top pick, and the moment he hears the signature Disney intro, he perks up with excitement.
An Endearing Attention Lover
When he isn’t glued to the screen, Oakley enjoys car rides, snacks, and quality time with his mom. Even in the car, he has a particular habit. He insists on holding hands with Kylie while she drives.
Oakley loves attention and does not hesitate to ask for it.
His signature “Oakley smirk” has become well known among Kylie’s followers. The sly little grin suits his personality perfectly and gives him a charming, mischievous look.
It is easy to see why people adore him.
Although Oakley is nothing like the adventurous Golden Kylie expected, he has become a one of a kind companion. Whether he is watching movies or reaching for her hand on the road, Oakley shows that the best pets are the ones who stay true to themselves.
