Out on a quiet back road in rural Oklahoma, three dogs had been left to wait with no one around and nowhere to go. Still, they stayed close to the same spot, as if part of them believed their owners might return at any moment.
When the weather turned rough, they did what they could to protect themselves. A tin culvert became their shelter, the place they slipped into whenever they needed cover from the elements.
A full week passed, and they were still there at that same lonely intersection.
That was when a kind passerby finally noticed them and reached out to rescuer Alysse Matlock. She did not hesitate. The moment she learned about the dogs, she stepped in and headed out to bring them somewhere safe.
Rescue And Rebirth
When Alysse arrived at the scene, she immediately noticed that Oakley, a Black Lab mix, was in the worst shape. He was the first dog she was able to rescue, with the other two dogs being caught later.
All three were brought to a shelter, where they received proper care and attention.
Alysse took Oakley home with her, and once he felt the love and safety of his new environment, he began to relax. It didn’t take long for his sweet, playful personality to emerge, showing just how thankful he was to be safe.
“He is such a sweet, smart dog that lives to please people. It angered me that people could be so cruel,” Alysse said.
She began sharing Oakley’s journey on Instagram, updating her followers and reminding everyone that no dog should ever be abandoned in such a heartless way.
A New Life Awaits
Under Alysse’s care, Oakley received a bath, medical care, and a thorough veterinary check-up. She reached out to Safe Haven Animal Rescue, who graciously agreed to cover his medical expenses during his foster period.
With consistent love and attention, Oakley recovered quickly and thrived in Alysse’s home. But she knew it was time to help him find a permanent family who would cherish him forever.
One day, a family from Minnesota saw Oakley’s story online and immediately fell in love. They drove all the way to meet him. Upon meeting Oakley, they knew he was meant to be part of their family.
“He was such an easy dog. He got along with everyone and anyone from the very beginning!” they shared.
Now, Oakley lives happily with his new family, who documents his adventures on his very own Instagram account.
