Picture yourself on a quiet walk through the park when something suddenly grabs your attention. At first, it looks like an injured animal, and the sound of its cries immediately pulls you in. You want to help, but you are not quite sure how to handle it on your own.
Then, as you move closer, the situation comes into focus. It is not a large animal at all, but a delicate gosling, struggling and clearly in urgent need of care. Realizing the bird needs proper help fast, you make the call to someone better equipped to step in.
That is exactly what one passerby did after finding the young bird. They reached out right away to New York wildlife rescuer Karenlynn Stracher.
Arriving At The Scene

As soon as Stracher received the call, she gathered her supplies and headed straight to the park. Upon arriving, she saw the young gosling wandering around, clearly lost and looking for comfort.
Having encountered situations like this before, Stracher immediately understood what needed to be done.
Stracher told The Dodo, “Unfortunately, this is a very common occurrence. If a gosling or duckling hatches late, is a bit weaker than the others, or gets injured, if not found by a kind human willing to take the time to find help, they will not survive.”

Stracher carefully approached the gosling and gently picked it up. The bird made no effort to resist, almost as if it instinctively understood she was there to help. Upon examining it, she noticed something unusual about its feet. They didn’t appear to be normal, indicating that the gosling needed immediate medical attention.
After securing the bird in her car, Stracher drove him to Sweetbriar Nature Center for further care.
A Quick And Steady Recovery

At Sweetbriar Nature Center, the veterinarians confirmed that the gosling had only a soft tissue injury, which was not serious. With proper care, they assured Stracher that the bird would recover quickly.
During his healing process, Stracher kept a close watch on his progress, checking in regularly. The gosling began to improve each day.

As soon as he regained his strength, Stracher made sure he was returned to his natural habitat. She was overjoyed to see him reunited with his family.
Stracher shared, “I was thrilled to hear how well he had done and that he was able to be released and enjoy the life he was meant to live. This little one was one of the very lucky ones!”
Thanks to the quick thinking of a concerned stranger and Stracher’s swift response, the gosling received the care he needed. Instead of continuing to struggle, he now thrives in his natural environment.
