California Rescuer Finds A Devoted Mama Dog With Seven Puppies And A Story That Gets Even Harder

California Rescuer Finds A Devoted Mama Dog With Seven Puppies And A Story That Gets Even Harder

A driver was passing through an orchard in Fresno, California, when something at the side of the road caught his eye so sharply that he hit the brakes.

There stood a dog, rigid with tension, looking straight at him with eyes that seemed to be begging for help.

Then he got closer, and the situation became even more striking.

She was not by herself. Gathered tightly around her were seven tiny puppies, and it was clear from the way she stood that she was protecting them with everything she had.

His first thought was simple, get them all out of there and somewhere safe.

But one look at the wary mother and all those little pups made it obvious that this was not something he could handle alone. He was going to need help, and quickly.

Reaching Out For Help

The man reached out to Helga Weiss, the president of Paw Squad 559 and co-founder of California Spay and Neuter, explaining the situation and asking for help. Weiss promised to come the following morning to rescue the family.

Before leaving, the Good Samaritan made sure the dogs had food and water nearby, and he marked the location to make it easier for rescuers to find them.

That night, Weiss couldn’t stop thinking about the mother dog.

“All I could think about was the puppies and the poor mom trying to defend her children,” Weiss shared with The Dodo

Early the next morning, she headed to the orchard, eager to help.

Gaining Trust And Making Progress

As Weiss arrived and stepped out of her car, she was struck with sorrow. The puppies had clearly been abandoned, and their mother was doing her best to protect them

When Weiss called softly to the puppies, they cautiously wagged their tails and approached her with hope in their eyes.

However, Mother Goose, as she would later be called, was more cautious. She barked and warned Weiss to stay back.

A ranch worker nearby informed Weiss that he had been feeding the family for several days, likely saving them from starvation. He also shared that the mama dog originally had eight puppies, but one had been taken by a coyote.

Weiss’s heart broke for the mama. No wonder she was so protective.

The Breakthrough Moment

Weiss took a seat near Mother Goose and began offering her sausages, patiently waiting to earn her trust.

After two and a half hours, the cautious mama finally realized that Weiss meant no harm. She allowed Weiss to gently gather her and her puppies and carefully place them in the car.

As Weiss held the exhausted dog close, overcome with emotion, something unexpected happened.

“As soon as I picked her up and loaded her into my car, she actually started licking the tears off my face. It was adorable,” Weiss recalled.

A Safe New Life

The family traveled north to Washington, where Save-A-Mutt Rescue took over and found them a loving foster home.

However, soon after settling in, foster mom Christie West noticed the puppies were not doing well

Fearing the worst, she rushed them to the vet, where they were diagnosed with parvo, a deadly and highly contagious virus.

Thankfully, Save-A-Mutt provided an innovative treatment, and the puppies slowly began to recover. With round-the-clock care from West, the pups regained their strength

Soon, they were back to playing and wagging their tails like nothing had happened.

The puppies were given nursery-rhyme-inspired names: Itsy Bitsy, Star Light, Little Bo Peep, Twinkle Twinkle, Humpty Dumpty, Peter Piper, and Miss Muffet.

A Bright Future Ahead

Now healthy and happy, the puppies are preparing for their forever homes. In just a few weeks, they’ll head to Save-A-Mutt in Washington to begin their search for a family. Until then, they’re enjoying the love and care from their foster mom.

Thanks to a kind stranger, a dedicated rescuer, and a community that refused to give up, Mother Goose and her puppies are now safe, loved, and ready for a bright future filled with happiness.
