Sometimes a dog’s entire life can change because one person chooses to care. For Poptart, that kind of kindness came not once, but twice, and it changed everything.
She was a sweet American Bulldog mix, but the life she had known up to that point had been nothing but hardship.
She spent her days confined to a cage, and when she was no longer wanted, she was abandoned along a rural highway in Virginia. By the time she made it to a shelter, Poptart was deeply confused.
She did not even seem to know how to simply be a dog anymore. But that was not where her story ended.
Caitrin and Aj came into her life with the things she had been missing all along, patience, love, and the kind of steady care that makes a new beginning possible. With them, Poptart was finally given the chance she had been waiting for.
The Life She Left Behind
According to the shelter’s veterinarian, Poptart had spent most of her life in a small, dark cage at a breeding facility, sleeping on a filthy floor.
When she arrived at the Spotsylvania Animal Shelter in Fredericksburg, Virginia, she was severely underweight and in poor health.
Her appearance made it painfully clear that she had been repeatedly bred and likely endured a botched home c-section before being discarded on the side of the road.
“Poptart came to us as a stray in 2018, underweight, unhealthy, and overused for breeding. The people who bred her most likely kept her in filthy conditions, performed an unprofessional home c-section, and then discarded her on the side of the road,” the rescue wrote in a Facebook post.
Life in the shelter was challenging for Poptart, so the staff decided to transfer her to a foster home, where she could begin to heal in a more nurturing environment. There, she met Nathalie, a kind foster mom who slowly helped Poptart open up and discover what life was truly meant to be.
Then, a week later, a miracle occurred. Caitrin and Aj, Poptart’s future adopters, arrived and soon became the loving pawrents Poptart had been waiting for.
Embracing Her New Life
At first, Poptart was unsure of her new cozy home. She was cautious, her shoulders hunched, and her face full of uncertainty. She wasn’t sure if she truly belonged there until Caitrin and Aj surrounded her with constant love and care.
Within weeks, Poptart blossomed into a confident, happy dog and quickly took her place as the queen of her new home.
Poptart is an active little athlete who loves running in the backyard with her dog brother, Doug. Indoors, her favorite pastime is taking long, cozy naps.
Despite rarely barking, Poptart keeps her family entertained with funny noises while she sleeps.
“Even after a morning at the park, I don’t rest. I am ALWAYS on duty,” her owners shared in a video.
Mealtimes are a performance with Poptart, as she spins in circles and dances with excitement whenever food is served. Caitrin and Aj love watching her joyful personality shine in these moments.
This wonderful couple is incredibly grateful to have Poptart in their lives. From the moment she entered their home, she has been nothing but a sweet, loving girl.
Each day is filled with joy as Poptart greets the world with the same enthusiasm she showed on her first day in her new home.
Caitrin and Aj ensure that Poptart knows she is deeply loved, and her painful past is now a distant memory.
“We tell her loudly and clearly that she is loved and her old life is never going back to what it was. We’ll make up for it every single day she’s on this planet, which hopefully is a really long time,” Caitrin told GeoBeats Animals.
With her new family and her dog brother Doug, Poptart is now creating joyful memories every day, and she couldn’t be happier.
