Dogs never run out of ways to amaze us.
Their gift for forming bonds stretches far beyond people or other dogs. Plenty of them become fast friends with cats, little household pets, or even farm animals without thinking twice about it.
What feels even more incredible is when a dog ends up forming a close friendship with a bird, creating the kind of bond no one would ever expect.
That is exactly what happened with Meeko, a Border Collie from Oregon. When his owner rescued an injured young crow, she had no idea Meeko would end up taking the little bird in as both a friend and something like his own responsibility.
Now, the two are inseparable, and their friendship only seems to grow stronger with each passing day.
A Bond No One Saw Coming
One morning, Oregon resident Autumn Buck stepped outside and discovered a troubling scene. Two young crows had fallen from their nest and were lying on the ground. Sadly, one had already passed away. The other was struggling to stay upright.
“One morning I found a baby crow that hadn’t made it… but nearby in the bushes was Russ. He was weak, scared, and couldn’t barely stand. His parents were close, but they wouldn’t come down to help him. I noticed the bottom of the nest had completely fallen out,” Buck shared on TikTok.
Acting quickly, she picked up the surviving bird and created a makeshift nest to give him a chance at life.
The baby crow, later named Russell, soon had a warm new setup with shelter, fresh water, food, and even a tiny pond to explore.
During the following weeks, Buck cared for him every day, feeding him and keeping him away from any possible danger. What she did not expect was that the role of protector had already been taken over by her loyal Border Collie.
Meeko immediately gravitated toward the small crow. He stayed close, watched over him, and allowed Russell to climb on him as if they had known each other forever.
It did not take long for a true friendship to form. Once Russell regained his strength and learned to fly, he still chose to remain near the family that saved him.
Russell Found His Place
Buck initially believed that Russell would return to his flock once he recovered, but she soon realized he had other plans. One day, she went out to her porch and saw Meeko and Russell happily playing fetch with a toy shaped like a birthday cake.
It quickly became their daily routine.
Russell discovered that he felt completely at home. Although he flew to a nearby tree to sleep each night, he always returned in the morning to be with Meeko.
“He learned to fly, he sleeps in the trees now, and he has a whole crow life of his own. But every day, he still comes home to play fetch with Meeko, hang out on the porch, or even knock on the window when he’s ready to play,” the Oregon owner added.
As for Meeko, he could not be more delighted.
Gentle and patient, he enjoys every moment with his feathered friend. Even when Meeko is relaxing beside Buck, Russell makes sure to perch close by, clearly valuing the companionship just as much.
It is clear that Russell is no longer just a rescued bird. He has become part of the household and intends to stay connected to them for good.
