For Stevens County Sheriff’s Deputy Wright, it began as nothing more than a calm patrol through rural northwestern Washington. Then his routine shift took a sudden turn when something unusual caught his eye.
A dog was sitting along the roadside, staring at him with an expression that seemed full of worry. She looked almost as though she was trying to tell him something, quietly begging him to step in.
Feeling that something was off, Wright pulled over and walked toward her.
His first thought was that she had gotten lost, so he tried to encourage her into his patrol car, intending to help her get back home. But the determined dog would not budge. What Wright did not realize yet was that this was only the start of a remarkable rescue.
The Dog Who Wanted To Be Followed

Believing her owner must be nearby, Wright began searching the surrounding forest. After finding no one, he returned to the road, where the dog was still waiting, eyes filled with worry.
When he tried once more to move her away from the area, the pup suddenly reacted.
“… [She] took off up a slightly travelled, unmarked roadway,” the sheriff’s office later wrote in a Facebook post.
Trusting his instincts, Wright decided to follow. The dog led him down a narrow, secluded path that ended at a small summer cabin hidden among the trees.
As the deputy scanned the area, he suddenly heard a faint voice calling for help. Turning toward the sound, he discovered an elderly man lying on the ground near the cabin.
The man was Gita’s 84-year-old owner. He had fallen, injured himself, and was unable to stand or move.
To make matters worse, the man suffered from serious health conditions and relied on daily medication. He had been stranded there for hours, unable to reach anyone.
Gita Becomes A Hero

If not for Gita’s loyalty and quick thinking, her owner might never have been found in time.
“He had laid there for hours and may have had serious consequences if he had not been found,” the sheriff’s office stated.
The story of Gita’s courage spread quickly across social media, touching hearts everywhere. Her actions showed, once again, the extraordinary devotion dogs have for their humans.

The sheriff’s office credited the 13-year-old pup with saving her best friend’s life that day.
I truly hope Gita’s owner makes a full recovery and that this brave dog continues to enjoy many more happy years by his side.
Thanks to Deputy Wright for trusting his instincts, and to Gita, the faithful hero who refused to give up until help arrived.
