After more than twenty years working in rescue, Donna Lochmann with Stray Rescue of St. Louis knows that helping stray animals is rarely straightforward. Gaining their trust usually takes time, patience, and a gentle approach, especially for dogs who have been let down by people before.
But one rescue caught her off guard.
A frightened Pittie she encountered on the street was trembling at first, clearly unsure of everything around her. Then, almost instantly, something changed.
The fear gave way to a soft, affectionate side so quickly that it surprised even Donna, and the moment ended up touching countless people who later saw it online.
Donna has handled more rescues than she can count, many of them difficult and emotional, yet this one stayed with her.
It was a powerful reminder that sometimes kindness can break through in the most unexpected way, and much faster than anyone anticipates.
From Trembling To Trusting

The rescue unfolded on Valentine’s Day after Donna received a call about a fearful dog spotted near an industrial site.
When she arrived, the dog cautiously peeked from behind a building corner. As Donna approached slowly, the dog tried to flee but became trapped between a fence and the wall.
“She was definitely looking for a way to get away from me, but there was no way out. She barked a couple of times, like a super-scared warning,” Donna told The Dodo.
Donna had saved countless strays, but none had responded quite like this one.

With no escape, the dog crouched low to the ground, tail tucked tightly in fear.
Seeing how scared she was, Donna started throwing her some food and talking sweetly to her. “I knelt down so she didn’t feel so threatened and started talking to her. I tossed one sausage over to her, and she ate it,” Donna said.
Expecting her to continue eating, Donna offered another piece. But instead of focusing on the food, the dog made a different choice.
She bypassed the sausages and walked directly toward Donna, as if she had finally recognized safety.
“She passed right by the other sausages. When she got to me, she nuzzled her head right in my shirt, then she rolled over and looked up at me,” Donna recalled.
The transformation was immediate and astonishing. Even seasoned rescuers were surprised by how quickly fear gave way to trust.
The dog, later named Cutie Pie, melted into Donna’s arms, finally realizing she was safe.

“It was so sweet, the way she looked up at me as if she were saying, ‘Thank you!’” Donna said.
All It Takes Is Love
Donna brought Cutie Pie to Stray Rescue of St. Louis, where she received food, a warm bath, and a thorough veterinary exam.

Everyone at the rescue quickly fell for her affectionate nature. With just a little kindness, her personality blossomed.
Her eyes, once clouded with fear, now sparkled with joy. Soon after, Cutie Pie moved into a foster home where she thrived.

“She curls up in her bed as well as her little foster dog brother’s bed. She has the biggest, sweetest smile, she loves zooming around the yard… she is one special soul with infectious joy,” the rescue wrote in their Facebook post.
After all she endured, Cutie Pie is now safe, cherished, and surrounded by the love she always deserved.
