Every dog seems to have some hidden skill that eventually catches everyone around them completely off guard.
For Tiki, a senior rescue, that special talent was equal parts smart and fearless, amazing not only the shelter staff but plenty of people online too.
This lovable little escape artist had clearly worked out a plan, and the Humane Society of Huron Valley was about to see it all play out on their security cameras.
Tiki was a social guy who could not stand being left alone in his crate overnight. So instead of sitting there waiting for someone to come by, he casually opened the door and wandered out like it was the most normal thing in the world, fully set on finding some company.
A Genius In Action
Tiki, a nine-year-old stray rescued from a roadside in Michigan, had impressed everyone from the start. Despite his time living outdoors, he was affectionate, confident, and clearly frustrated by being left alone.
With the shelter at capacity, Tiki spent his initial nights in a crate inside an office, but he had other plans.
Without waiting for morning, he broke free, opened the office door, navigated the hallways, and slipped out the main entrance.
Fortunately, an early-arriving veterinarian spotted him outside, returning him safely.
Staff hoped that would end his escapades, but Tiki had another scheme in mind. The very next night, he executed the same escape flawlessly, this time slipping completely out before anyone noticed.
Tiki navigated hallways and doors with precision, eventually making his way into the nearby Matthaei Botanical Gardens.
Employees there brought him back, assuming he belonged to the shelter, marveling at how a dog could pull off such a clever getaway.
Finding The Home That Fits
Two weeks after the escape video went viral, Tiki was adopted in Michigan. Sadly, his first adopter had to return him due to his intense separation anxiety whenever left alone.
“He was adopted, until separation anxiety proved challenging. We now know he needs someone who’s home a lot right now and can work through it,” the Michigan rescue stated on Facebook.
Despite the setback, shelter staff remained hopeful, confident that Tiki’s affectionate and gentle nature would eventually lead him to the right person.
Their patience was rewarded.
Not long afterward, the shelter announced that Tiki had found his forever home with a newly retired man eager to welcome him.
“He has been in one of our fosters for the past remaining portion of his time, and today Tiki hit the jackpot with his new freshly retired dad! We at HSHV wish Tiki the happiest of homes,” the rescue concluded.
Now Tiki is settled exactly where he belongs. Perhaps someday his new dad will witness one of his clever antics, or even a repeat of his famous escape.
