Texas Volunteers Discover Skeletal Dog In Park Shelter Fighting To Stay Alive

Imagine coming across a dog lying completely still inside a small kennel. That was the heartbreaking sight volunteers faced when they found Prima, a severely neglected dog who had been abandoned by her owners.

She was so painfully thin that, just to stay alive, she had been driven to eat whatever she could find, a desperate attempt that nearly cost her everything.

By the time help reached her, Prima was in critical shape. Her condition was far worse than anyone first realized, and only immediate intervention gave her a chance.

Barely Hanging On

Jannel and Robby, two dedicated volunteers from Houston, Texas, discovered Prima during one of their regular visits to a local park where they often fed abandoned dogs. She was curled up inside one of the makeshift shelters provided by Corridor Rescue.

As Jannel approached, she quickly realized something was wrong. Prima’s belly was bloated, her body skeletal, and she could barely lift her head.

Closer inspection revealed the full extent of her suffering. Her spine protruded sharply, her frame was alarmingly thin, and her swollen abdomen pointed to serious health complications, possibly late-stage heartworm disease. With trembling hands, the volunteers offered her food and water. Though cautious, she accepted.

“This girl was starved to the point that when she was dumped she ate anything she came across and continued to eat,” Corridor Rescue shared on Facebook.

Knowing she wouldn’t survive much longer, Jannel and Robby contacted Corridor Rescue immediately.

“I was shocked at what I saw when she stepped out. She was emaciated with a very large stomach. I immediately started making phone calls knowing she needed rescue right away,” Jannel wrote.

With gentle coaxing, they helped Prima out of the kennel and into their car. During the ride, she seemed to relax, as if she understood she was finally safe.

A Risky Battle For Survival

At the veterinary clinic, Prima’s diagnosis was grim: she had reached the final stage of heartworm disease. The parasites had migrated into her pulmonary artery, making surgery nearly impossible.

Initially, her prognosis was bleak. She was labeled a hospice case, and the plan was to keep her comfortable in a foster home where she could feel loved during her remaining time.

Her rescuers were heartbroken. It was clear that Prima had endured years of neglect and cruelty before being discarded. Along with her failing health, she carried emotional scars and struggled to trust.

But after careful evaluation, the medical team decided to pursue an aggressive treatment plan. It involved a series of injections over several months; a risky protocol, but her only hope.

In the meantime, Prima received fluids, small meals throughout the day, and antibiotics to help her fragile body recover.

Amazingly, she began to improve. Her bloating subsided, her energy returned, and her appearance slowly transformed. Against all odds, Prima was fighting back.

“She wasn’t going to let anything from her past stand in her way of a happily ever after. This little miracle refused to be held down by the word hospice any longer,” the rescue wrote in a Facebook post.

Week by week, her spirit grew stronger. After months of pain and exhaustion, Prima finally discovered joy: playing, relaxing, and bonding with her foster family.

Just a few months later, Prima was a completely different dog. Her body had filled out, her coat gleamed, and her eyes sparkled with life.

She became a playful, affectionate companion who loved attention. Her foster parents described her as pure sweetness, always eager to cuddle and never far from their side.

They joked that capturing a still photo of her was nearly impossible unless she was asleep, because she was always wagging, moving, or playing.

The label of “hospice pup” was gone. Prima was now healthy, joyful, and ready for a permanent home. Before long, the perfect family came along.

She was adopted into a loving household where she continues to thrive. Her new family adores her, and she embraces every moment of her new life with enthusiasm and love.

After everything she endured, Prima finally understands what it means to be cherished.

None of this would have been possible without the compassionate rescuers who refused to give up. Thanks to their dedication, a once-forgotten dog now has a future filled with warmth and happiness.
