That is exactly what happened one morning at a job site in Missouri. The day had started like any other, routine tasks, familiar surroundings, nothing unusual in sight.
Then an unexpected encounter interrupted the normal flow of work and turned an ordinary morning into something the contractor would remember for a long time.
An Unexpected Discovery At The Worksite
Upon arriving at the location, the contractor quickly noticed he wasn’t the first to show up.
A spirited group of squirrels had already made themselves at home, darting around the area.
He gently ushered them away to clear the space and then resumed his tasks. Picking up a nitrogen canister, he gave it a shake and began spraying resin-based foam into a small opening.
Unbeknownst to him, one tiny squirrel had remained behind. In a frantic attempt to flee, the little animal leapt directly into the freshly sprayed foam.

The contractor sprang into action, carefully pulling the animal free and rushing it to the Missouri Wildlife Rescue Center (MWRC).
“The contractor acted very quickly, removing as much foam as possible before rushing the squirrel to the Wildlife Rescue Center,” wrote MWRC on their Facebook.
Delicate Work Begins At The Wildlife Center
The contractor’s swift response gave the squirrel a chance at survival, but the situation remained serious.
At MWRC, the staff was now faced with the intricate task of freeing the tiny animal from the thick, dangerous coating.
The animal care team moved fast, carefully working with cotton swabs and vegetable oil to loosen the foam before it could harden further.
They proceeded with extreme care, working slowly and methodically. Sedatives and pain relief were administered to keep the squirrel calm and to make the process as gentle as possible.
Step-By-Step Effort To Stabilize The Squirrel
The first priority was to clear the squirrel’s airways. Staff carefully swabbed his nose and mouth to restore normal breathing.
They then cleaned his eyes and continued working across his small frame, removing the hardened foam bit by bit where it restricted his movement.
By the end of a long and exhausting day, the team had managed to remove a significant amount of the material. The squirrel was given fluids and placed in a warm, quiet space to rest and recover overnight.
When the next day arrived, the team resumed their careful work. After several more hours of patient cleaning, the squirrel was finally free of the foam. His fur was once again soft, though his skin remained irritated and raw in some areas.
Despite the discomfort, he appeared more alert and visibly relieved to move without restriction.
We are still keeping a close eye on his condition, and he has a long way to recover, but we are amazed by his current progress.
Though recovery remains ahead, optimism is high.
