Pennsylvania Shelter Dog Left Alone By His Owner Still Greets Kindness With Gentle Kisses

Pongo was still just a young dog when the person he trusted most chose to leave him behind.

His owner abandoned him alone inside an apartment and vanished without so much as a goodbye. Confused and heartsick, Pongo could not understand why everything in his world had suddenly gone still.

All he really knew was that someone was missing, and he kept holding onto the hope that his person would come back.

When the landlord finally discovered him, Pongo was brought to Animal Protectors of Allegheny Valley, a shelter in New Kensington, Pennsylvania.

From the moment he got there, the shelter staff surrounded him with compassion, doing everything they could to soften his loneliness and show him that kindness was still out there.

Pongo Begins To Heal Through Connection

Life at the shelter brought structure, affection, and much-needed attention.

Staff members made sure Pongo went on frequent walks and received plenty of interaction. At three years old, he had boundless energy and needed regular outdoor time to stay settled and content.

That is when volunteer Danielle Baughman became an important part of his world. Before long, she was one of his favorite people, taking him on trips that gave him a break from shelter life.

Baughman often brought Pongo to the park, and sometimes even welcomed him into her home. There, he delighted in playing with her cat, clearly enjoying every moment of feeling included.

On one recent outing, she took him to a pool, where he splashed and played alongside a close canine friend who had already found a home.

Pongo always finds a way to show his appreciation.

After each adventure, he gently presses kisses onto Baughman’s face, his quiet way of expressing gratitude for the care she gives him.

Baughman regularly shares videos of shelter dogs on TikTok in hopes of helping them get noticed. Moved by Pongo’s affection and devotion, she decided to post a short clip of him on her page.

“He always says thank you for our adventures,” read the caption in the video.

In the video, Pongo rests his head against her shoulder and showers her with kisses, a tender moment that perfectly captures how deeply he has bonded with her.

Waiting For The Family He Has Been Missing

Pongo has now spent nearly two years at the shelter. Although there have been people who showed interest, his forever home has yet to come.

Evenings are the hardest for him. Being alone is something he struggles with, and he often climbs out of his kennel searching for comfort near other dogs.

To keep him safe, the shelter team built a special enclosure designed just for him, making sure he stays secure through the night.

Through it all, Pongo’s affection for people has never faded. When visitors arrive, his excitement spills over, and he greets them with enthusiastic jumps and wagging energy.

Baughman believes that this eagerness is sometimes misunderstood by potential adopters, who may mistake his joy for roughness.

Outside the kennel, however, Pongo is gentle, loving, and eager to connect.

Even with his special outings, returning to the shelter is always difficult. He longs for the day when he will not have to say goodbye, when he will finally belong to a family of his own.

His ideal home would be with people who enjoy being active and who understand that he needs time and patience to settle in.

Until that day arrives, Pongo continues to wait,
