Many people believe wild animals should be left to fend for themselves, trusting that nature will sort things out on its own. To some, an injured creature is simply part of the way the world works.
But every so often, kindness from a human makes all the difference.
While we can’t dictate how wildlife survives, we can step in when an animal is clearly in distress and give them a chance to heal.
That’s exactly what happened when a woman in Pennsylvania walked outside and was met with a heartbreaking sight right in her own backyard.
An Owl Entangled In The Backyard Net
On what seemed like an ordinary morning, the Pennsylvania resident walked outside and immediately stopped in her tracks. In her volleyball net, an owl was caught, thrashing and unable to escape.
As she moved closer, she realized the bird was still alive but completely ensnared. Unsure of the safest way to help, she hesitated, hoping for a solution.
Neighbors soon noticed the situation and hurried over. Working together, they carefully cut through the netting, freeing the exhausted owl and placing him gently inside a box to keep him secure.
Word quickly reached Raven Ridge Wildlife Center (RRWC), and a volunteer arrived to assist. The owl was transported to their facility for a thorough evaluation.
Fortunately, no bones were broken. His only issue was extreme exhaustion from hours of struggling against the net. With rest and proper care, his recovery was expected to be swift.
Guidance And A Return To Strength
Rescuers explained that the owl most likely collided with the net during the night when visibility was poor. They reminded homeowners of the importance of removing or securing nets after dark to prevent similar incidents.
Once provided with food, water, and attentive care, the owl’s strength began to return. Staff members quickly grew attached to his spirited personality and were encouraged by how rapidly he regained energy.
His rehabilitation progressed smoothly, and soon he was nearly ready to return to the wild. Until the release was possible, RRWC continued to provide nourishment and support, ensuring he reached full health.
The team once again emphasized how vital it is to store nets safely overnight so that wildlife does not become trapped in the same way.
