A tiny dog moved unsteadily through the chaos of a crowded California street, her limp making every step a struggle as she tried desperately to avoid the rush of cars and find a safe place.
Though fear and pain weighed heavily on her, she clung to a fragile hope that someone kindhearted might notice and come to her aid.
That hope was answered when Ivy and Jaina Spagis, the founders of Cats of San Bernardino, spotted her from their car. Without a moment’s hesitation, they pulled over and rushed toward her.
It was immediately clear that she was injured, most likely from being struck by a vehicle, and she was in urgent need of care if she was to have a chance at recovery.
A Careful Approach And A Moment Of Trust
Ivy moved slowly toward the injured pup, careful not to frighten her further.
The dog, later named Reina, seemed to recognize that these strangers wanted to help. She inched forward, her tail tucked but her eyes soft with trust.
When Ivy finally lifted her into her arms, Reina relaxed completely, as if she knew she was safe at last.
“As soon as I got her in my arms, she kind of just melted into me,” Ivy told The Dodo.
During the short drive to the vet, Reina stayed nestled against Ivy’s chest, refusing to move. Ivy gently stroked her fur, whispering words of comfort, assuring her that she was no longer alone.
At the veterinary clinic, Reina was immediately examined and kept overnight for observation. X-rays confirmed that her front leg was broken.
The vet gave her pain medication and placed her leg in a cast that she would need to wear for about three weeks.
When Ivy and Jaina returned the next day, Reina’s tail wagged furiously as she greeted them with a smile.
Her rescuers were overjoyed to learn that her leg injury was her only major wound and that she would make a full recovery.
A Safe Place To Heal
Back home, Ivy and Jaina prepared a cozy spot for Reina to rest. She curled up in her new bed right away, as if she understood that she was finally safe.
Over the next few days, Reina soaked up affection from her rescuers, her tail wagging constantly.
Despite all she had endured, she showed nothing but joy and gratitude. Her resilience amazed everyone who met her.
Soon after, Meghan, one of the volunteers at Cats of San Bernardino, came to visit and instantly fell in love with Reina. She knew right away that she wanted to give her a forever home.
After her cast came off, Reina moved in with Meghan and began a brand-new chapter. She bonded quickly with her new dog siblings, played in the yard, and soaked up every bit of love she was given.
Today, Reina lives happily in California, surrounded by affection and care. Her transformation from a scared, injured stray to a joyful, confident companion is proof of how compassion can completely change a life.
Reina’s smile says it all. She knows she’s home at last.
