Watching an animal fight to survive on its own is a painful sight, and unfortunately, it happens far too often.
This particular story drew widespread attention after caring people began posting online about a German Shepherd in Montebello, California, who had remained in the same spot for several days.
The photo of him resting beneath a tree struck a chord with everyone who saw it. His stillness carried a quiet plea, making it clear that help was urgently needed before his situation grew worse.
A Rescue Mission Begins With Challenges
Isabel Gallardo, a seasoned rescuer based in Marinwood, California, saw the posts and immediately set out to help. But when she arrived in Montebello, the situation proved more difficult than expected.
“When i arrived an AC officer had just parked and I told her I’m here for him. We tried for several hours to catch him, she called for back up but this boy said ‘not today ladies’.” Isabel wrote in her Facebook post.
Fortunately, Isabel had strong ties within the rescue community. She reached out to fellow rescuer Suzette Hall, who arrived with a humane trap that finally allowed them to safely secure the frightened dog.
They named him Monte. After enduring days of fear and isolation, he was finally out of danger. Isabel expressed gratitude to everyone who helped, including “Laurie Mitchel for so many things [she] can’t list, [her] invaluable friendship and rescue experience,” as well as “Laura [Bobadilla] for being the eyes in Montebello.”
Isabel brought Monte home, determined to give him the care and comfort he had been missing.
Becoming A Whole New Dog
Just a few days later, Suzette Hall, the founder of Logan’s Legacy, posted a hopeful update on Facebook.
“Before and after,” she wrote in her Facebook post. “This is the way it’s supposed to be , in a home and in a bed . Not dumped laying under a tree”
She explained that Monte had been through a lot, but they were addressing each issue with care and patience.
At the Camino Pet Hospital in Irvine, California, Monte was diagnosed with anemia. Right after that “he got a medicated bath, flea treatment, dewormed, bloodwork, injection of an anti-inflammatory plus the cytopoint and antibiotics.”
“After a good few weeks of no fleas and a proper diet, we will get him neutered and a dental,” she wrote. “This sweet baby will be a whole new dog.”
Monte’s journey toward healing had begun. Thanks to the rescuers who refused to give up on him, his future now holds promise.
“We love you so much sweetheart,” Suzette wrote at the end. “We won’t give up on you like they did.”
