Texas Woman Stops For Stray Pup On Highway And Changes Her Life Forever

Sunny had likely started to lose hope as car after car zoomed past without stopping. Sitting alone on a highway median, she was vulnerable and unsure where to seek safety.

While she accepted the occasional scraps tossed her way, what she truly needed was someone who would notice her, care for her, and help her out of the situation. Just when it seemed no one would stop, help arrived.

A Volunteer Acts Quickly

Karla, a dedicated volunteer from Trapping, Rescue, and Pet Recovery Service (TRAPRS), was driving through Austin, Texas, when she saw Sunny stranded on the median

The young dog gazed at the passing cars with a look of desperation, as if pleading for someone to pause and help her.

Concerned for Sunny’s safety, Karla immediately pulled over and took action.

“[It’s] our team’s worst nightmare: seeing this randomly while driving. With traffic picking up, we knew this dog had no good outcome if left to her own fate,” TRAPRS wrote on Instagram.

Without any equipment or treats on hand, Karla took a calm approach and spoke softly to the pup as she slowly moved between lanes to get closer.

Sunny, relieved to see someone approaching, did not resist.

As Karla gently lifted her, it was clear Sunny felt the weight of safety returning, breathing a sigh of relief. Another TRAPRS volunteer, Alicia, arrived soon after to help guide them across the highway.

Inside Karla’s car, Sunny visibly relaxed. For the first time in days, perhaps even longer, the situation seemed hopeful.

The volunteers offered her food, and she ate eagerly. Soon after, she was placed in an emergency foster home where she could rest and begin to recover from the stress of the past days.

Seeking A Loving, Calm Home

While Sunny’s current foster family is temporary, she needs a permanent home where she can continue to grow and build confidence.

Her rescuers believe that she has been without consistent care for a long time, and she will do best in a quiet and loving environment.

“She’s been through a lot and needs a patient family while she rests and comes out of her shell. She enjoys going outside for walks, taking naps, and is quiet in her crate. She may do well with another calm dog. She could thrive in a home or apartment,” Caitlin Chapman, the director of TRAPRS, shared with The Dodo.

Sunny is now surrounded by people who care for her. With a full belly, soft bedding, and plenty of affection, the painful memories of her past are fading. It is only a matter of time before this sweet pup finds the loving forever home she deserves.
