Animal rescue stretches far beyond the familiar world of cats and dogs.
Countless individuals devote themselves to helping creatures of all kinds, from wildlife to barnyard animals such as goats, pigs, and horses. Much of this work happens quietly, yet every species deserves the same chance at safety and compassion.
Stories like this one help bring those efforts into the light.
For Clare Staples, a Texas-based rescuer focused on saving horses, an unexpected sight completely altered the course of her day and demanded swift action.
Discovery Of A Rare Crossbreed

While searching for horses that needed assistance, Clare came across a situation that instantly pushed her into response mode.
At an auction house, she spotted an extraordinary animal scheduled to be sold, and likely targeted by trophy hunters. She stepped in with determination, knowing she had little time to spare.
The animal was a hybrid of a zebra and a donkey, known as a zonkey.
The name may sound made up, yet it is a real term for the rare offspring of those two species, and this young creature wore the traits of both.

Clare set her sights on rescuing the zonkey, who had been given the name Zebedee.
Watching him in the pen, she could see the anxiety and isolation in the way he held himself, waiting for the day he would be auctioned off.
Staples told The Dodo: “He touched my heart. In the end, by a miracle, we ended up rescuing him.”
When Zebedee finally reached the sanctuary, the change in his demeanor was immediate.
Clare gently introduced him to two companions, Mabel the donkey and Snowball the mini pony, hoping their presence would help him settle into his new home.
A Trio Finds Its Rhythm

The three formed a connection far quicker than anyone expected. Zebedee began clinging to Mabel as though she were his mother, even trying to nurse from her.
Because he was still so young, the sanctuary team supplemented his care with bottle feedings to support his development.
Little by little, Zebedee’s personality emerged. His energy grew, and soon he was racing around the sanctuary beside Mabel and Snowball, releasing his first eager bursts of play.

His joyful zoomies became a daily sight, and the team took them as a sign that he finally felt safe enough to be himself. Staples said, “He will grow up knowing nothing but love and care.”
With steady attention and devotion, Clare Staples is giving Zebedee a life shaped by protection, affection, and the opportunity to flourish exactly as he should.
