Crunchy, a small stray from St. Louis, Missouri, knew that struggle intimately. His frail frame was weighed down by thick, matted fur, and every step brought pain. Yet deep inside, he never abandoned hope that his circumstances could change.

Crunchy wandered St. Louis streets in distress. His fur was so overgrown that it obscured his vision, and his raw, sore paws made walking almost impossible.

The rescue team quickly identified his condition as critical. To relieve his suffering, veterinarians sedated him before carefully removing his heavy, filthy coat.
Nearly 10 pounds of matted fur were shaved away in total.
“He was very scared when he first woke up after being sedated and shaved and cleaned. He would snap and hide — but he enjoyed being tucked in,” Natalie Thompson, the rescue’s director of marketing, told The Dodo.

After the last matted clump was gone, a completely new dog emerged. For the first time, his gentle face and bright eyes were visible.
