Animals experience emotions just as humans do, and in many cases their feelings run even deeper than ours. Because of this, it is especially devastating when someone abandons a companion animal, leaving them confused, frightened, and alone.
A passerby in the Bronx, New York, witnessed a heartbreaking scene when she spotted a tiny head poking out of a bag that was dangling from a dumpster. What she found inside left her stunned.
A Terrible Discovery
The woman approached the dumpster with growing concern, uncertain of what she would find. As she got closer, she realized that the small face staring back at her belonged to a ferret.
Shocked and unsure of what to do, she immediately reached out to Small n Furry Rescue for help.
“I saw the email and my heart dropped,” a Small n Furry Rescue representative told The Dodo.
It did not take long for the rescuer to arrive. She carefully removed the frightened little ferret from the bag and prepared her for safe transport.
“I am working on getting the ferret transported to the rescue. Once safe with me I will have him evaluated by a veterinarian. As long as he does not need to be held as evidence (the finder will be reporting the abandonment to NYC animal control) the ferret will be looking for a new home once cleared by a vet,” she wrote on her official Facebook page.
Since owning ferrets is illegal in New York City, the rescuer followed all the required steps to ensure the animal was handled properly and legally. She knew exactly what needed to happen next.
Safe At Last
The little ferret was named Trash Panda. Now that she was finally removed from danger, she waited at the rescue for her veterinary checkup.
“Despite being found thrown away like trash, this little ferret seems to be in great spirits. She appears to be quite young and has no obvious injuries,” her rescuer shared.
Soon after, more details emerged. Trash Panda was estimated to be between six and eight months old, and she was identified as a Marshall’s ferret, which explained her gentle and affectionate nature.
Her veterinary exam revealed a concerning health issue. Although she was not critically ill, her condition showed signs of stress.
“Her heart rate was over 300 beats per minute, very fast for a ferret. Our vet did a brief cardiac exam and has come to the conclusion that she may be in some sort of shock. Considering we do not know how long she was in the bag and possibly without food or water, this could all be from lack of nutrition and dehydration, but we are watching her closely,” her rescuer explained.
Bloodwork soon revealed anemia and low platelets, meaning she would require ongoing treatment.
Still, Trash Panda began showing more of her bright personality, and one of the clinic nurses even grew fond of her and considered adopting her once she recovered.
As the days passed, Trash Panda made remarkable progress. She gained strength, became more playful, and her health continued to improve.
Soon she was ready to move forward with the next chapter of her life.
A Future Filled With Hope
On November 23, along with warm Thanksgiving wishes, the rescue shared the best update yet.
“Trash Panda, the baby ferret that was found tied to a dumpster in the Bronx, is doing fantastic! She is continuing to gain weight, her symptoms are improving and her true playful personality is starting to show!” the post read.
The most heartwarming part was that she already had a forever home waiting for her.
A loving family with two other ferrets was prepared to welcome her once her recovery was complete. Soon Trash Panda would enjoy the companionship she had been deprived of for so long.
Considering how social ferrets are, the joy she must feel is beyond measure.
Her journey serves as a powerful reminder of the responsibility pet owners hold and the compassion all animals deserve.
