Many dogs bark at nearly everything they see, often so frequently that their owners stop paying attention.
For Shelly Lisi, who lives in a quiet rural area of New York surrounded by farmland and a nearby horse property, barking was nothing unusual. Her two dogs loved to “announce” any passing animal, and usually the noise ended within a minute or two.
This time, however, the barking did not stop.
It continued far longer than normal, and Lisi realized something was different. Curious and slightly uneasy, she stepped outside to find out what had captured her dogs’ attention. What she discovered waiting in her yard was completely unexpected.
A Small Visitor Appears
Her dogs had been barking for nearly twenty minutes straight, which told Lisi they were determined to alert her to something important.
When she finally reached them, she saw her two dogs circling around a tiny figure in the grass: a small kitten who refused to move. Suddenly, the nonstop barking made perfect sense.
Although startled at first, Lisi quickly took control of the situation.
“I was a little alarmed, and the kitten was quite frightened but feisty,” Lisi told The Dodo. “As soon as I got out there, the dogs calmed down — they were more curious than anything. I was able to pick up the kitten and we got him into a crate in our garage so we could look him over.”
Once the kitten was safe, Lisi began searching for his family. She went door to door and checked outdoor security cameras in her neighborhood, but no one recognized him or knew where he had come from.
Even though this unexpected guest was not part of her plans, it quickly became clear that fate might have had something else in mind.
A New Chapter Begins
Lisi could not be certain of the kitten’s health, so she arranged for him to be checked. Other than being slightly underweight, he was healthy and alert.
At first, he was understandably nervous in his new surroundings. With patience and gentle care, his sweet and playful personality began to shine through.
Before long, the entire family had fallen in love with him. To everyone’s delight, he also bonded wonderfully with the dogs.
The harmony in the household made Lisi’s next decision simple. She chose to adopt him herself.
