Shaking Pup Discovered After California Earthquake Stuns His Rescuers

Dogs feel their safest when wrapped in the warmth of a loving family, knowing someone is always there to comfort and protect them. Sadly, countless homeless dogs have no one to rely on. They face fear, hunger, and uncertainty entirely on their own.

Royce was one of those overlooked pups. He spent his days wandering the streets in search of compassion and a place to belong.

So when a 5.2-magnitude earthquake rattled Southern California, Royce had no familiar arms to run to. Instead, the tiny, severely matted dog curled up behind a school at the end of a cul-de-sac. Trembling with fear, he looked heartbreakingly alone.

Would help reach him in time?

A passerby noticed Royce hours after the quake and saw the poor dog shaking nonstop. His entire body revealed how terrified he truly was.

The sight quickly reached Suzette Hall, founder of Logan’s Legacy 29, and her volunteer, Mary Nakiso. Both women dedicate their lives to helping abandoned animals, and they immediately drove out to locate Royce.

Nakiso arrived first. As she approached, she saw someone had generously left food and water for him, but Royce remained frozen in fear, overwhelmed and defenseless.

“[There were] sticks in his fur, and [he was] shaking and scared. [The] poor baby was probably so scared when we had that earthquake,” Hall later wrote on Facebook.

Nakiso felt her heart sink for the fragile pup. She sat beside him and spoke gently, hoping to ease the panic inside him.

Her calm, soothing words seemed to reach him. Royce looked up at her with eyes that showed a spark of trust.

When Hall arrived moments later, she could see how delicate and frightened he was.

Working together, she and Nakiso set up makeshift barriers using gates and trash bins to prevent him from darting away.

They expected him to run, but instead, Royce surprised them. He stayed still and allowed them to slip a leash around his neck. It was as if he finally felt safe enough to accept help.

New Beginning For A Once-Forgotten Pup

Calm and grateful, Royce let Hall pick him up and carry him to the car. They took him straight to Camino Pet Hospital in Irvine, California, where he received a full check-up and lab work. Thankfully, he was healthy, with the exception of his painfully tangled coat.

Veterinary staff gave him a gentle bath and carefully shaved away the heavy mats covering his body

Underneath the grime and knots was a beautiful dog with bright eyes and a joyful expression. His tail wagged as though he already felt lighter and free.

After his grooming and medical care, Royce moved into a loving foster home. There, he finally experienced the affection and security he had long been denied.

Safe, clean, and surrounded by kindness, Royce blossomed into a cheerful, affectionate pup. His confidence returned, and he began showing the lively spirit he had kept hidden behind fear.

Now, Royce is patiently waiting for the forever family who will cherish him the way he has always deserved.

For this sweet dog, the earthquake did more than shake the ground. It became the moment that led him from fear and suffering to hope and transformation.
