Arkansas Shelter Team Finds An Empty Crate At Sunrise, Then Discovers Who Had Been Inside It

When staff at Furgiven Animal Sanctuary in West Memphis, Arkansas, arrived at work around 8 a.m., something immediately felt wrong. Sitting beside the road near their building was an empty crate.

Concerned, the team quickly checked the security cameras to understand what had happened. The footage revealed that during the night, two small puppies had been left inside the crate by an unknown person.

The video showed the pups already sitting outside the shelter at about 2:30 a.m.

Staff searched the area in every direction, hoping the puppies were still close, but there was no sign of them. As the minutes passed, everyone began to fear the worst.

The Puppies Return To The Roadside

Lee Ridings, Director and Co-founder of the sanctuary, believed the pups were likely abandoned overnight because rescue groups were packed.

“I’m sure they were left in the middle of the night because most shelters in the area are full and they were afraid they would be denied admission. I can’t confirm anything but based on the area I’d guess they were part of an accidental litter,” he said in an interview.

Ridings and the team were devastated by the conditions the puppies had endured.

“It’s already hot here this time of year but they were left next to a busy road. Their crate was dumped maybe a foot from the road. It had no bottom, instead they lined it with roofing shingles,” he added.

Late that morning, their worry eased when the two frightened siblings finally returned to the same spot where they had been left hours earlier.

The pups trembled as they watched the staff approach. Their barks were filled with fear, and they stayed several steps back, unsure if they could trust anyone.

Treats were offered, but the puppies remained cautious, unsure whether these humans meant safety or danger.

Gaining The Puppies’ Confidence

The rescuers knew they needed to be extremely careful. One wrong move could send the puppies running toward the busy traffic.

They crouched low, spoke softly, and continued holding out food in hopes of earning even a tiny bit of trust.

Slowly, their patience began to make a difference. The pups edged closer, inch by inch, until at last they were comfortable enough to eat from the rescuers’ hands.

With gentle timing, staff slipped a leash around the male pup. They named him Dell.

His sister, later named Brynn, was far more frightened. She froze in place and refused to let anyone come close. Every attempt to guide her only made her shrink back farther.

Knowing she needed more time, the team placed food inside the crate and stepped away.

After several tense minutes, Brynn finally walked inside to eat. Staff carefully closed the door, relieved to have her safe at last.

Safe, Loved, and Ready For A New Life

Both puppies were carried inside the sanctuary and rushed to the veterinarian. They were underweight and clearly stressed, but otherwise healthy.

Within the comfort of the facility, surrounded by loving hands, Dell and Brynn began to relax. Their stiff posture softened, their eyes brightened, and soon their sweet personalities emerged.

Before long, the pair greeted staff with tail wags, warm nuzzles, and happy little kisses. The fearful babies who once hid from everyone were now showing joy they had kept buried deep inside.

Dell and Brynn quickly became known as affectionate cuddlers who adored people. Today they are waiting to be adopted into homes that will cherish them for the rest of their lives.

May these two precious pups find families that will never abandon them again.
