While tending to their yard one afternoon, a New York couple encountered an unexpected situation that immediately captured their attention.
They noticed a furry creature struggling in their pool, uncertain of its identity but recognizing it needed help.
As they approached, it became clear the animal was wild, prompting them to carefully consider the safest way to assist without causing harm.
It Turns Out To Be A Raccoon

Upon closer inspection, the couple realized a raccoon was trapped in the pool, unable to swim to safety. It struggled to escape but could not manage on its own.
They acted quickly, scooping the animal out and placing it on the grass, hoping it would regain composure. The raccoon, however, tried to flee, only to become stuck on a steel fence while attempting to escape.
Recognizing they lacked the experience to handle the situation safely, the couple contacted John Debacker for assistance.
He told The Dodo: “I don’t receive too many calls [about] animals stuck in a pool or on a fence,”.
A Careful Rescue Leads To Safety

Debacker arrived on the scene, donned gloves, and carefully worked to free the raccoon from the fence. He noted the animal’s fear and defensiveness but remained focused on ensuring its well-being.
He continued by saying: “He was a bit feisty. But [he] calmed down when he was lowered into the carrier.”
After securing the raccoon, Debacker transported him to a New York wildlife rehabilitator, Leslie Hyder, who would provide care and attention.

The raccoon received all necessary medical treatment, and after a period of recovery with Hyder, he was released back into the wild.
Although the animal could not express it, the rescuers were confident the raccoon benefited from their intervention, gaining another opportunity to thrive.
Their compassion extended beyond common pets to the wild creatures in need, highlighting the value of careful and considerate action in animal rescue.
