When Donna Lochmann, chief life-saving officer at Stray Rescue of St. Louis, Missouri, and her partner Randy received a call about a dog family in danger, they acted immediately. They drove straight to the scene, fully prepared to help.
Upon arrival, they were confronted by a mother dog fiercely guarding her litter. She barked relentlessly, signaling the rescuers to keep their distance. Despite the mother’s protective warnings, the team was determined to secure the family’s safety.
Earning The Mother Dog’s Confidence

To reduce the tension, the rescuers first offered the mama dog food. While the treats allowed them to inch closer to her puppies, she remained wary and continued barking loudly, making it clear that her trust had not yet been earned.

The team devised a new approach. Randy continued providing food and speaking softly to the mother dog, creating a calm presence, while Donna carefully moved closer to reach the puppies. Their coordinated efforts succeeded, allowing them to access the litter safely.
A Puppy In Danger

One by one, Donna carried the tiny pups to a secure area. Then she noticed one puppy trapped beneath a pile of leaves, wedged tightly against a fence and crying for help.

Donna worked slowly and carefully, freeing the little puppy without causing injury. Once liberated, the pup was safe and unharmed.
Meanwhile, the mother dog’s persistent barking signaled she was still unsure about trusting strangers, showing that rescuers would need another strategy to bring her in safely.
Securing The Mother Dog
Both Donna and Randy decided that a humane trap would be the safest method to secure the mama dog.

Initially, she circled the cage cautiously, hesitant to enter.
Over time, her wariness faded, and she stepped inside, activating the trap. To the rescuers’ relief, the previously anxious mother appeared calm and cooperative once secured.

With the entire family finally together, Donna and Randy were able to transport them to safety.
A New Beginning
The mother and her puppies were settled into a comfortable apartment, complete with food, water, and warmth. For the first time in a long while, they no longer had to struggle to survive.

The puppies can now grow strong and healthy until adoption, while their mother can rest knowing her family is safe.
Soon, this sweet group will find loving forever homes, where they will be cherished and cared for, fulfilling the life they have always deserved.
Good luck, little family!
