Life is already difficult for stray dogs, but for one small puppy who slipped into a canal in California, things became even worse.
When Suzette Hall, founder of Logan’s Legacy in Irvine, learned about a helpless pup trapped with no way out, she immediately knew she had to respond. Realizing the danger, she called for backup before rushing to the scene.
A Risky Mission To Save Him
Hall contacted her friend Nelson, and together they hurried to the canal, determined to bring the little one to safety.
The situation was more dangerous than they had expected. The canal walls were steep, and the puppy had clearly gone a long time without food or water. Every minute mattered.
“Nelson was so incredibly brave, he literally climbed down into the canal. He literally didn’t know how he would get back out but he didn’t give up,” Hall wrote in a Facebook post.
Terrified, the pup tried to run from Nelson, but he kept at it patiently.
After several tense moments, Nelson finally managed to scoop him up using a net and carefully climbed back out, holding the trembling dog in his arms.
Once the pup was safe, Hall gathered him close, letting him know he was no longer in danger. She then drove straight to her friend Kristina’s home, where the puppy was finally able to rest in warmth and comfort.
Sammy’s Long Recovery
The next morning brought new concerns. The puppy, now named Sammy, was still nervous and limping in pain. A foxtail had become lodged between his toes, leaving the area badly swollen and infected.
A surgery was scheduled right away to remove it.
Thanks to caring donors and a skilled veterinary team, Sammy’s procedure went perfectly.
“He’s in recovery and doing just fine. He had one tooth extracted. He’s going to be on pain, meds, and antibiotics,” Hall wrote.
A Forever Home Found
While recovering, Sammy stayed under the care of a kind veterinary technician. She quickly noticed that he was happier in a home than at the clinic, so she volunteered to foster him.
But after spending a few days together, it became clear she couldn’t part with him.
Hall explained that the tech had fallen completely in love with Sammy, and before long, he was officially adopted.
Now, Sammy’s life is full of love and security. He has a human family that adores him and a furry sibling to share his new adventures with.
Thanks to the courage and compassion of everyone involved, a frightened pup who once faced danger alone now lives the life he always deserved.
