There are few pains as deep as losing a beloved dog. When a cherished companion vanishes, the quiet that follows can feel endless.
For Shamantha Powers, a resident of Indiana, that heartbreak became her reality when her dog Loki went missing. Her world fell apart in an instant, and despite tireless efforts to find him, every lead led to disappointment.
Nearly two years passed. Powers had no choice but to let go of hope. Until everything changed with one unexpected call.
Searching Everywhere, But Finding Nothing
The day Powers accepted that Loki might never return was one of the most difficult moments of her life. From the moment he disappeared, she searched relentlessly, posting on every platform she could think of in hopes of finding even the smallest clue.
“As soon as I got home I searched high and low, posted on all social media platforms.. PetSmart, lost animals, Pet finder, Craigslist, all the things I could possibly think of, all with no luck! ” Powers wrote on Facebook.
As days turned into months, the possibility of seeing Loki again grew dimmer. Eventually, she stopped believing their paths would ever cross again.
Then, out of nowhere, a phone call changed everything.
The Miracle Call
Staff members at Fort Wayne Animal Care & Control in Indiana reached out with news Powers never expected to hear.
Loki had been found. He had escaped from the person who had been caring for him during his time away.
Once he arrived at the shelter, he was scanned for a microchip. The familiar beep confirmed his identity and led the staff straight to his original family.
“We were able to contact his owner and that is when we found out she had been missing him for almost 2 years and could not contain her excitement that we had her baby,” FWACC wrote in a Facebook statement.
For Powers, the news felt surreal. After so long without him, she was finally going to be reunited with her dog.
“After searching endlessly for him I kinda lost hope. Until I got the phone call yesterday that they found my boy. I can’t begin to explain the overflow of emotions I am going through,” she added in another post.
When Powers arrived at the shelter, staff brought Loki out on a leash and waited to see if he would recognize her. It took only seconds.
With a burst of joy, Loki jumped and wiggled with excitement, unable to contain his happiness. His energy filled the room, and tears flowed freely. He knew instantly: his momma was there.
She had come back for him.
The two embraced, holding each other tightly and making up for every day they had been apart. After nearly two years, they were together again, and nothing would pull them apart.
After leaving the shelter, Powers and Loki returned home to begin a new chapter. It took Loki a few days to adjust to his old surroundings, but once he settled in, his joy was unmistakable.
Now, the two are reunited and ready to face whatever comes next. This time, they’ll do it side by side.
