Sara Williamson never expected her quick trip to the grocery store would turn into a rescue effort. As she exited a Kroger in Mississippi, her eyes were drawn to a tired, solitary dog wandering near the parking lot.
In that moment, Williamson noticed something that made her heart sink: the dog had clearly given birth recently and was still nursing. Without hesitation, she turned around, went back inside the store, and bought food to offer the struggling mother.
The dog kept her distance, too wary to approach. It was obvious she had spent a long time surviving on her own, her trust in people nearly gone. Still, Williamson couldn’t bring herself to walk away.
Following A Trail Of Hope
Though the mama dog seemed to want help, her fear kept her from accepting it. That night, temperatures were expected to drop to 19 degrees, and the thought of newborn puppies left out in the cold haunted Williamson.
When the dog wandered off, Williamson decided to follow, hoping she might lead her to her babies. But before she could catch up, the dog vanished.
During her search, Williamson encountered another stray named Tilly, who had her own litter of puppies. She called her mother, an experienced rescuer, and together they brought Tilly and her pups to safety.
Even after helping one family, Williamson couldn’t stop thinking about the Kroger dog. She posted a photo of her in a local Facebook group, asking if anyone had seen her. Community members responded, saying the dog had been spotted in the area for years.
Though she didn’t find the mama that night, Williamson held onto hope that she and her puppies would survive the cold.
A few days later, her phone lit up with a message that changed everything.
“A day or two later, someone commented on the Facebook post I made saying they had seen Kroger Dog that afternoon playing with her puppies by a shed. The shed coincidentally was right near the area where we had rescued Tilly just days prior,” Williamson told The Dodo.
Rescuing The Puppies Before The Cold Returns
Williamson and her mom rushed to the shed. As they peeked underneath, three tiny faces stared back at them.
The puppies, later named Crosby, Nash, and Stills, were timid at first. But with gentle encouragement, they slowly crawled out from their hiding place.
The women scooped them up and carried them to safety.
Although it was painful to separate them from their mother, Williamson knew she couldn’t leave them exposed. The temperatures were dropping again, and the puppies were too young to survive on their own. She also feared that someone with harmful intentions might find them after her Facebook post.
Initially, the pups were nervous in their new surroundings. But with warmth and affection, they began to relax. Soon, they were bouncing around, revealing their playful and silly personalities.
“We think they were probably around 4 to 5 weeks old when I found them, and they were growing like WEEDS. They are going to be huge, fluffy boys,” Williamson added.
Friends of Homeless Animals of RI (FOHA) stepped in to help, placing Crosby, Nash, and Stills in foster homes in New England, where they’ll soon be matched with loving families.
While the puppies are now safe and thriving, their mother remains on the streets. Williamson and her mom continue to visit her daily, patiently working to earn her trust.
Their greatest hope is to bring her in and show her the love and security she’s never known.
Until that day arrives, the story of this little family stands as a testament to the strength of dogs, and the unwavering kindness of those who refuse to give up on them.
