New York Pit Bull Abandoned In A Yard Waits For Someone To Show Her Kindness

Iris came into the care of the Philly Bully Team, a foster-based rescue in Brooklyn, after being surrendered by a backyard breeder.

This gentle girl was completely shut down. Even the soft rustle of a treat bag made her flinch and hide.

Her past remained a mystery, but her fear made it clear that she had either suffered abuse or had never known human affection. Without love or kindness in her life, she had no idea how to feel safe.

Thanks to the patience of her foster family, Iris slowly began to change. Her healing journey was filled with challenges, but every small step forward mattered.

When Iris first arrived at her foster home, she was withdrawn and confused.

“You could tell that she did not understand why we were near her, why we were around her, and she would flinch, and she just looked so sad,” Lauryn, Iris’s foster mom, told The Dodo.

She refused to step inside the house, choosing instead to stay in one corner of the yard. No matter how much her foster family tried to comfort her, she remained frozen behind the planter.

“Sometimes her head would pop up, and it looked like she was like growing out of the planter,” Lauryn joked.

Her foster family gave her space and patience, knowing that pushing her too soon would only make things harder.

For an entire month, they left the back door open so she could come and go at her own pace. “She would like, come in, and she’d poke her head in, and then she’d leave, and she’d do that 15 times,” Lauryn said.

Eventually, Iris took a deep breath and walked inside. From that moment, everything started to shift.

She learned that gentle touches could bring comfort, and affection was something to enjoy rather than fear.

“I don’t think she really understood human engagement. I would like, you know, hug her, and pet her more often. She would look at me like, ‘I don’t know what you’re doing, but I like it,’” Lauryn said.

Discovering The Joy Of Play

After about a month, Iris’s foster family introduced her to their other dog, Max.

At first, they simply sat together quietly in the yard. But as the days passed, Iris began to show curiosity. Eventually, she took a leap of faith and started to play.

“She was frolicking around our yard, pouncing around like this baby elephant. And I was just sitting there like ‘Oh my God, what, who is this dog?’,” Lauryn said.

That moment marked the beginning of Iris’s transformation.

Not long after, one of Lauryn’s friends heard about Iris and reached out.

Jacki and Matt, a couple from Philadelphia, were instantly drawn to Iris’s story. They decided to adopt her, giving her the loving home she had always deserved.

“The first night, she jumped in the bed right away. She never even thought about it,” Matt told The Dodo.

Their dog, Clio, quickly became Iris’s best friend and guide. Wherever Clio went, Iris followed. The two became inseparable.

Every day brought new joy. Iris’s personality blossomed as she learned how wonderful life could be when surrounded by love.

“She’s an absolute sweetheart, she doesn’t have a vicious bone in her body. She loves Clio. We are super lucky to have her. We love her,” Iris’s parents said.

From a frightened, broken pup in a Brooklyn yard to a joyful dog surrounded by affection, Iris’s story shows how compassion and patience can rebuild even the most shattered hearts.
