Everyone who knows Rose Hunter from Lincoln, Nebraska, is well aware of her deep love for houseplants.
She is a regular at Campbell’s Nursery in town, and it was during one of her usual visits that something extraordinary occurred.
Instead of leaving with another plant for her growing collection, she walked away with something far more precious: a tiny life that desperately needed her help.
A Shocking Discovery
On her way home from Campbell’s Nursery at 56th and Pine Lake in Lincoln, Hunter spotted something strange on the pavement.
At first glance, it looked like an oil stain on the concrete, but as she stepped closer, she realized it was something else entirely.
From a distance, it seemed to be a small, furry lump.
“I was sad thinking it was a baby rabbit,” Hunter shared in a Facebook post.
Curiosity pushed her to investigate, and to her astonishment, it wasn’t a rabbit or a squirrel. It was alive.
“YOU GUYS IT’S A BABY KITTEN!!! And it is ALIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I cannot believe this, and idk what to even do right now,” she wrote.
The kitten was tiny, no more than five days old, and so fragile that it barely moved.
“I felt very exhilarated. Suddenly, my heart rate jumped up as I realized that I needed to do something — but what?” Hunter told The Dodo.
She gently scooped the newborn into her hands and placed him safely in her car.
Her first instinct was to keep him, but she knew he was far too young to survive without his mother. Hoping the mom was nearby, she called the nursery to ask if anyone had seen a stray cat. Sadly, no one had.
Refusing to give up, Hunter returned to the parking lot the next morning, praying the kitten’s mother might return.
By then, she had already given him a name: Campbell, after the nursery where she found him.
Searching For A Solution
“I took Campbell back to Campbell’s in the area I found him to see if his mom might return. Unfortunately, there was no sign of her. Given how massive that property is, it was a long shot, but at least we tried,” Hunter explained.
With no mother cat in sight, Hunter knew she had to find another solution.
After a veterinary check-up, it became clear that Campbell was under a week old and much too young to be raised without a nursing mother.
Thankfully, Hunter’s Facebook post reached a friend whose mother’s cat had just given birth. A plan quickly came together for Campbell to join the mother cat and her litter.
“I want what is best for him and for him to have the full kitten experience. And this way he can properly learn how to be a cat and socialize with fellow kittens,” Hunter said.
Miraculously, the foster cat, Tully, accepted Campbell as one of her own.
“It was remarkable to watch their first meeting and see him latch onto her for the very first time,” Hunter recalled.
A New Beginning
For the next six weeks, Campbell flourished in his foster home. With Tully’s care and guidance, he learned how to play, interact, and grow alongside his foster siblings. The once helpless kitten transformed into a lively, curious little ball of energy.
When the time came for him to leave foster care, Hunter didn’t hesitate for a second.
“There was no question about it. Honestly, within a minute after discovering him, I was like, ‘Okay, so your name is obviously going to be Campbell,’” she told The Dodo.
Today, Campbell is thriving in the Hunter household. He’s playful, affectionate, and endlessly curious: a perfect companion for the woman who refused to walk away that day in the parking lot.
What began as a simple trip for houseplants turned into something far more meaningful.
The tiny “furry lump” on the pavement turned out to be a life worth saving and a bond that will last forever.
