For those seeking a memorable thrifting adventure, a stop in Horseheads, New York, offers more than just vintage treasures.
Juliet Motyka, an energetic and seasoned thrifter who has explored shops across the country, discovered something truly delightful during her visit to Gifted Goods II.
While the store featured plenty of secondhand gems, the most unforgettable part of her trip wasn’t an item on the shelf.
From the moment she stepped inside, Juliet was greeted by Brutus, the shop’s unofficial canine “employee” and resident charmer. His warm welcome turned an ordinary shopping trip into something far more special.
Brutus Welcomes Shoppers

Brutus has spent years perfecting his role as the store’s most beloved greeter, making every guest feel instantly at ease.
“When I walked into the thrift store, Brutus came and said hello right away. He was this cute little ball of energy … and then I took a few steps inside of the building, and then I, all of a sudden, had a ball by my feet,” Motyka told The Dodo.

As a dog owner herself, Juliet immediately understood the invitation. She gently kicked the ball, and Brutus eagerly chased after it.
While she browsed the aisles for hidden treasures, she realized she had gained a furry companion. Brutus had clearly mastered the art of winning hearts, one game of fetch at a time.
“Brutus followed me around the entire time. The only time he stopped was when a younger couple of girls came in and started playing with him, so somebody else took my job,” Motyka said.
Brutus Turns Every Aisle Into A Playground
No matter where Juliet wandered in the store, Brutus stayed close, gently nudging the ball back toward her feet.
She couldn’t resist continuing the game, careful not to send the ball into any fragile displays.
“Every time I kicked it, he was ready — that’s what he expected. It’s like it’s what I was supposed to do,” Motyka explained.

When it was time for Juliet to leave, Brutus looked briefly disappointed. But the moment another shopper entered, his tail began wagging again, ready to welcome his next playmate.
Gifted Goods II is known not only for its eclectic inventory and great prices, but also for its strong community ties and support for the aneurysm community.
And, of course, for Brutus, whose joyful presence transforms every visit into something unforgettable. Few thrift stores can claim a four-legged greeter who turns shopping into a game of fetch.
For many, Brutus alone is reason enough to return.
