New Mexico Man’s Run With Shelter Dog Turns Into Something Incredible

New Mexico Man’s Run With Shelter Dog Turns Into Something Incredible

Working in animal rescue often comes with challenges, especially when caring for dozens of dogs while trying to find them each a loving home.

Because of this, some dogs end up spending far too long in shelters. But that doesn’t stop rescuers from doing everything they can to help.

From sharing posts online to organizing adoption events, these dedicated workers and volunteers constantly look for creative ways to get their pups noticed.

One volunteer had an idea that would make a lasting difference. When he took a shelter dog named Elmer out for a run, he hoped it might help her find a home. What happened next was something he never anticipated.

A Run That Sparked Something Special

Wesley Swainston, an animal lover with years of experience around dogs, began volunteering at Adoption First, a shelter in Jacksonville, North Carolina.

While serving in the Marine Corps, Wesley spent his free time helping at the shelter, and he came up with a simple but brilliant way to make a difference: combining his regular runs with giving shelter dogs a much-needed break from their kennels.

Running allowed the dogs to stretch out, release pent-up energy, and enjoy the fresh air, something many shelter dogs rarely get to do.

It also became a great way to promote adoptions. As he ran through parks and neighborhoods, Wesley would hand out small “business cards” that included each dog’s adoption information, giving them more visibility within the community.

After moving to New Mexico, Wesley continued his volunteer efforts, this time with the Bernalillo County Animal Care and Resource Center.

That’s where he met Elmer, a gentle pup who had already spent more than 130 days at the shelter, still waiting for someone to take her home.

Elmer was calm and reserved, which unfortunately made it harder for her to catch people’s attention during adoption events.

Wesley decided to take her out for a run, hoping the outing would lift her spirits and help her shine a little brighter. It turned out to be an experience neither of them would forget.

During the jog, Wesley stopped to chat with another runner and shared Elmer’s story. To his surprise, the woman was moved by what she heard and became genuinely interested.

Although she couldn’t adopt Elmer herself, she promised to spread the word about the sweet pup, believing she deserved a loving home just as much as any other dog.

When the run ended, Wesley and Elmer returned to the shelter after an afternoon full of sunshine, exercise, and hope.

The day gave Elmer more than just a bit of fun. It gave her visibility, affection, and a new chance at being noticed by the right person.

While she is still waiting for her forever home, Elmer now has a growing circle of supporters who believe her happy ending is close.
