If we could rank them by severity, abandonment would probably be one of the cruelest betrayals a dog can endure.
Just picture it: your pup gives you everything: loyalty, love, trust, entertainment, companionship. And then, all of it is shattered in the blink of an eye. They’re left behind on empty roads, in fields, or outside shelters, not knowing that the person who drove away will never come back.
This is exactly what happened to Apollo, a sweet Georgia dog whose heartbreaking abandonment was caught on camera, leaving rescuers in shock.
Cruel Act Of Abandonment
Audray Luck, founder of Luck’s Rescue, is used to finding dogs abandoned in all kinds of places: roads, remote locations, cardboard boxes.
So, when she received a text about an owner abandoning his dog on a remote road in Menlo, Georgia, she immediately rushed into action. To make matters worse, the entire situation was filmed by a camera.
The footage reveals an owner parking his car on the side of the road. In the next moment, he opens the car door and lets the dog out.
The pup, later named Apollo, is evidently enthusiastic, thinking it’s just a casual nature stroll. But when the owner closes the door and drives away, he’s left with nothing but fear and trauma.
Over the next couple of days, Audray searched the area high and low, hoping to get to the dog before the inevitable. Then, it finally happened!
Luck spotted a white lump of fur down the road from her car. When she got closer, she realized: it was Apollo!
“For the last 48 hours since he was dumped like someone’s trash I have been looking for him tirelessly. Today I got the tip I needed and rushed up there. It took me just over a hour to gain his trust but once I did I watched all the fear melt away out of his big brown eyes,” Audray wrote in the post.
At first, Audray didn’t know what to expect. She knew that Apollo’s trust was shattered, so she decided to take things slow.
She called him out from a proper distance, using nothing but kind words and delicious treats. Little by little, the dog gave in completely. He let Audray approach and even let her put a leash on him.
The next minute, Apollo was already in the car with his rescuer, now driving off to a much safer place: her rescue.
Apollo’s Second Chance
While Apollo’s abandonment case is still under investigation, Audray and her fellow rescuers hope that justice will be served.
In the meantime, Apollo will receive everything needed for a fresh start. He’s already feeling much better on safe ground, with proper care and hoomans to socialize with.
When the time is right, Audray hopes that Apollo will find the people who truly deserve him. His gentle nature will definitely add joy to the family looking for a lifetime companion!
