Tiny Dog Found Tied To A “Do Not Abandon Animals” Sign In Michigan Breaks Hearts Everywhere

At Harbor Humane Society in Michigan, staff members work tirelessly to protect animals and prevent people from leaving them outside.

To discourage abandonment, they placed a clear sign near the front entrance that reads:

“Do not abandon an animal here. Wait until business hours. No fee for bringing an animal to HHS. For the sake of the animal, please be humane.”

A second sign with the same message hangs behind the building, close to a picnic table where employees often take breaks.

For a long time, people followed the shelter’s request. But one morning, everything changed.

A Painful Discovery

When a staff member arrived early to open the shelter, everything seemed normal at first. The front area was quiet, and nothing appeared out of place. But when the employee walked behind the building, they noticed something that made their heart sink.

A small dog was tied to the post of the very sign that pleaded with people not to abandon animals. The staff member immediately realized she had likely been left there overnight.

Security footage later confirmed that suspicion. The video showed the little dog, later named Trixie, had been tied up around 9 p.m. and discovered at 7:30 the next morning. She had spent nearly eleven hours alone in the dark.

“Initially, she was nervous and scared, barking at her. But once she crouched down and gave her some time, she quickly warmed up and crawled right into her lap. She has been very friendly ever since!” said Jen Nuernberg, director of marketing and strategic initiatives at Harbor Humane Society, in an interview with The Dodo.

Spending the entire night alone had clearly terrified Trixie. But once she met her rescuers, her fear began to fade. She was brought inside, wrapped in warmth, and given a comfortable space to rest.

When more staff arrived and learned what had happened, they were heartbroken.

Veterinary staff quickly ran tests to make sure she was healthy. Fortunately, she showed no signs of injury or illness, only confusion and fear from being left behind.

Searching For Clues

“When someone abandons an animal without any information, we are just left to guess. So we can assume she is about 3 to 4 years old, but we don’t know her story, her name, her likes, her favorite treats or toys. This is all information we try to get on animals when they are surrendered to the shelter,” explained Jen Self Aulgur, executive director at Harbor Humane Society.

The team hopes that someone who recognizes Trixie will reach out with details about her background. Even the smallest bit of information could help staff find the perfect new home for her.

“This pup deserves to have her story and history known. We do not want to shame or get you in trouble — we just want to help this poor pup,” Self Aulgur said.

For now, Trixie is surrounded by loving people who make sure she has food, comfort, and companionship every day. She is beginning to show her gentle, affectionate personality and enjoys spending time with her caretakers.

Once she has fully adjusted, she will be placed for adoption. Until then, she’s learning to feel safe again.

A Lesson In Kindness

This heartbreaking situation is a reminder of why animals should never be left alone like this.

Pets become deeply attached to their families, and when they are abandoned, they are left confused, frightened, and vulnerable.

If someone can no longer care for a pet, the best thing to do is bring them directly to a shelter during business hours. Talking to staff ensures the animal has the best chance at a stable and loving new home.

For Trixie, that compassion arrived a little late, but her second chance has already begun. She now has people who care for her and a future that looks brighter every day.
