There’s no doubt that love is the most powerful cure for fear.
In the animal world, where many dogs face danger and uncertainty each day, love can change everything.
Abandonment, fast cars, harsh weather, and hunger can break a dog’s spirit. But with enough patience and kindness, even the deepest fears can fade.
Van Buren’s story is proof of that.
As a frightened young pup wandering the streets of California, he never imagined his life could be filled with safety and affection. But it did.
A Chance Encounter Changes Everything
Van Buren’s transformation began on what seemed like an ordinary day. He was roaming a street he would later be named after when Mary, a local horse veterinarian, spotted him.
With her experience caring for animals, Mary instantly knew the little dog needed help. His eyes told a story of fear and exhaustion. The challenge was that he was too scared to come near.
Still, Mary refused to give up. Every day, she returned with food, patience, and gentle words. Slowly, Van Buren began to trust her. Over time, he allowed her to come closer, and eventually, he even let her touch him.
Just a few days later, he trusted her enough to wear a leash.
From Fear To Friendship
Building trust was not easy, but Mary understood that what he needed most was love, not confinement. Instead of taking him to a shelter, she brought him to her horse ranch. That decision changed everything.
Today, Van Buren is a joyful, confident dog.
“She has had him for over a month and has worked with him every day and he’s a lovely dog. He is now vaccinated and neutered. We think approximately 6 months. Sort of a lab mix. He’s about 50lbs,” says Van Buren’s Petfinder profile.
Ready For His Next Chapter

In just a few weeks, this once-nervous dog learned how to socialize and respond to training. He now plays well with other dogs and even with the horses on the ranch. And when it comes to people, he’s completely devoted.
Van Buren loves both kids and adults, making him a wonderful companion for any family.
“He’s good with people and other dogs. He’s really a nice dog and would make a great pet for someone looking for a large dog,” his profile reads.
For now, Van Buren enjoys his days on Mary’s ranch, surrounded by open fields, sunshine, and care. After everything he’s survived, he finally feels loved and safe.
What he hopes for next is a forever home. Mary believes the perfect family will find him soon and give him the life he deserves.
After all, every dog deserves love and that’s exactly what Van Buren has to give.
