At the Greenville Humane Society, a routine morning changed in an instant. Staff noticed a Staffordshire Bull Terrier mix tied near the entrance, alone through the night. Next to her was a handwritten letter.
The note read: “My sister could not take care of her the way she needed to be. She has illnesses I don’t believe are fixable. She needs to be put down as soon as possible.”
The dog, later identified as Remy, was struggling with a rare and serious heart problem. Her owner, unable to keep up with treatment, left her where help might be found.
“It Was Desperation, Not Cruelty”
Local outlet WYFF reported that Remy was discovered early Sunday. Rachel Dalport of the Greenville Humane Society told WYFF: “It was someone who truly wanted the best for her, and just didn’t know what to do.”
Staff believed the decision came from fear and confusion, not malice.
First Exams And An Urgent Plan
Once Remy was safely inside, veterinary staff documented a grade-six heart murmur and a skin condition consistent with poor nutrition.
The shelter explained the next steps plainly: “This serious condition will require an echocardiogram, at minimum. Depending on what is found during the procedure, Remy may require surgery or a lifelong medication regimen.”
To cover Remy’s expenses, along with many similar cases, the team leaned on their Hope Fund.
As they shared on Facebook, “We’ve had more sick and injured animals in our care recently than we have the funds for. We know shelters everywhere are in the same predicament.”
What The Tests Revealed
Further evaluation brought a measure of relief. Remy’s heart issues were attributed to B1 degenerative valve disease. That diagnosis, while significant, suggested surgery might not be needed. Her care plan now includes daily heart medication, treatment for her skin, careful nutrition, and close monitoring by the medical team.
Remy is not entirely out of danger, but the path forward is clearer. She is comfortable, responding to care, and surrounded by people who are determined to help her feel better.

It is not yet known whether Remy has been matched with an adopter. What is certain is that she is in safe hands. The Greenville Humane Society continues to advocate for her health and well-being, and her caregivers believe she has a real chance at a happy life.
