California Shelter’s Scooby-Doo Lookalike Longs For A Family, Then Finds His Perfect Match

California Shelter’s Scooby-Doo Lookalike Longs For A Family, Then Finds His Perfect Match

When a kind-hearted family saw a tall, brown dog with a striking black muzzle wandering the streets of Camarillo, California, they couldn’t ignore him. They brought him home and treated him with love and care.

This gentle giant quickly adapted to his new surroundings. The family’s two other dogs and young children welcomed him warmly.

Although he settled in well, the family believed he might have an owner somewhere. They searched thoroughly, but no one came forward.

After a week, they made the difficult but hopeful decision to take to Ventura County Animal Services, trusting the shelter to find him a permanent home that matched his spirit and size.

Starting A New Chapter At The Shelter

As soon as he arrived at the Camarillo shelter, the family’s hopes were validated. The dog immediately charmed the staff with his sweet personality and affectionate behavior.

When he arrived, the staff who was the first to meet him said that he was seeking affection. He was leaning on the staff member, licking his hand,  really friendly off the bat…,” Jules Hooper, marketing specialist at Ventura County Animal Services, told The Dodo.

Weighing in at approximately 180 pounds, this Great Dane was one of the largest dogs the shelter had ever taken in.

When he stood on his hind legs, he towered over most of the staff, clearly eager for hugs and attention.

The team affectionately named him Scooby Doo, inspired by his resemblance to the beloved cartoon character.

Scooby Doo’s Wish Comes True

Scooby Doo dreamed of a family that could keep up with his energy and help guide his behavior. At just two years old, he was full of excitement and needed structure, patience, and regular activity.

He had a habit of pulling on the leash, often toward people, hoping for affection.

He is strong and he does pull quite a bit on the leash… He loves people, so sometimes he’ll try to pull towards people because he’ll get pets and love,” Hooper added.

Once Ventura County Animal Services posted Scooby Doo’s story online, it quickly gained attention. Within days, the ideal adopter came forward: his future mom.

Scooby Doo was overjoyed when she arrived to take him home.

Though Scooby Doo’s journey ended happily, more than a hundred large dogs still wait at the Camarillo shelter, hoping for a loving home or a temporary foster placement.

For those with space and compassion for a big dog, Ventura County Animal Services may have your next loyal companion.
