North Carolina Woman Races To Highway After Seeing Post About Dog Left In Kennel With ‘Free’ Sign

Trust is the foundation of every meaningful relationship. It’s what holds bonds together.

Unfortunately, not everyone offers that trust to animals. Too often, loyal dogs who give humans their whole hearts are left behind, discarded as if they never mattered.

When that trust is shattered, the emotional wounds can run deep, making it hard for them to believe in kindness again.

This is the story of Nova, a gentle dog who was cruelly left inside a kennel on the shoulder of a busy highway.

Nova is a remarkable dog. Despite her difficult past, she never stopped hoping for a better future. But that hope was crushed when her owner abandoned her in a kennel with a handwritten “free” sign, right beside a high-traffic road.

It’s hard to comprehend how someone could do such a thing. To make matters worse, the location was dangerous, with cars speeding past.

Thankfully, one compassionate person couldn’t walk away. Moved by the sight, they shared Nova’s story online, hoping someone would step in to help.

That someone was Madison Nygard, a committed volunteer with Pawfect Match Rescue in North Carolina.

She explained to People: “I was on my way. I had seen it a couple of minutes after it had posted it. I got to Nova before the post hit the hour mark.”

When she arrived, she was devastated to see Nova sitting beside the kennel, the painful “free” sign still attached. She couldn’t understand how anyone could leave behind such a sweet soul.

After a brief conversation with animal control officers at the scene, Nygard made her decision: she was taking Nova home.

She brought her to a veterinary clinic for a full examination to ensure she was healthy and didn’t need urgent care.

“I knew that at least if I brought her into the house, she would have food in her belly, and I could physically monitor,” she said.

Now safe in Nygard’s foster home, Nova could finally relax. From that moment forward, she welcomed every bit of affection with gratitude.

She quickly formed bonds with everyone in the household, and Nygard was amazed by how well she adapted despite all she’d been through.

Though Nova loved her foster family, Nygard knew she deserved a permanent home. Fortunately, several interested adopters soon came forward.

The adoption process will take time, but until then, Nova is surrounded by warmth, comfort, toys, and most importantly, a family that truly cares.
