All dogs deserve families who cherish them and make them feel safe and cared for. Unfortunately, some owners fail these loyal companions, leaving them behind with no thought for what comes next.
Today’s story is about Gibbs, an adorable six week old puppy who learned what it feels like to be completely alone. Someone placed the tiny pup in a cardboard box and left him outside a shelter during the night.
Frightened and isolated, he began to cry, hoping a kind person would hear him and come to help.
A Cardboard Box On The Bench
Late one evening, a staff member at a shelter in Orangeburg, South Carolina, remembered an unfinished task and returned to the building.
As they approached the entrance, they noticed a cardboard box resting on a bench. A label on the lid read “small.”
Just as they went to check the contents, soft cries rose from inside. Lifting the lid revealed a pair of the sweetest puppy eyes looking up at them.
The little dog’s face was sad yet hopeful. The worker carried him indoors right away. The puppy, later named Gibbs, relaxed as the staffer offered food and gentle care.
Although the employee felt disheartened that someone had abandoned such a sweet pup after hours, they were grateful they had come back that night.
From Online Plea To Rescue Plan
The next morning, the shelter shared the story of the abandoned puppy on Facebook. Eunoia Rescue in Charleston, South Carolina, soon saw the post and offered to take him.
The moment they met Gibbs, their hearts melted. It was hard to believe anyone could leave behind such a precious dog.
He received a much needed bath to remove fleas and worms that had been clinging to his small body. Otherwise, he was doing well. Staff surrounded him with warmth, cuddles, and steady attention.
Blooming In Foster Care
After his initial care, Gibbs moved to a foster home where he now enjoys constant affection and a safe place to grow.
“He LOVES other dogs and acts like he weighs 50 pounds instead of just a measly 4 pounds and will chase all his foster siblings around. He’s happy, healthy and just waiting to be big enough to be neutered before he’s adopted,” Eunoia Rescue told The Dodo.
Knowing that kind people stepped up to help is heartening. Gibbs is already learning that the world can be a gentle place filled with good humans and soft beds.
There is every reason to believe this lovable pup will soon find a forever family who will treat him right. Until then, he will keep gaining strength, playing with his foster siblings, and soaking up the affection he always deserved.
