California Woman Finds A Forgotten Pet, But The Real Shock Comes Days Later

In El Dorado, California, spotting wildlife near the lake is a common experience.

Mathilda was used to seeing animals during her walks, but she didn’t expect to come across a tiny bundle of fur squirming in the dirt on one of her visits.

Intrigued, she stepped closer to investigate. The moment she realized what she was looking at, she knew exactly what she had to do.

Abandoned And In Need Of Help

As Mathilda leaned in, she saw that the creature rolling in the dusty hole was a rabbit. Though she wasn’t familiar with caring for bunnies, something felt off.

Then the rabbit made the first move. “She came up and asked me to pet her,” Mathilda shared in a Facebook video posted by The Dodo.

That moment confirmed it: this wasn’t a wild rabbit. She was a domestic pet, likely abandoned and left to survive on her own. Her eagerness for affection showed just how lonely she had become.

Moved by the rabbit’s gentle behavior, Mathilda decided to take her home to Los Angeles.

At the vet’s office, her suspicions were confirmed. The rabbit had no microchip.

That settled it. Mathilda adopted her and gave her a name: Honeybun, affectionately called Bun Bun.

She believed giving this sweet rabbit a safe home was the highlight of her day. But something even more surprising was about to unfold.

A Secret Revealed At Home

Soon after arriving at her new home, Bun Bun began acting strangely.  “She started ripping out fabric, nesting a lot, gaining a lot of weight,” Mathilda said.

Initially, Mathilda thought she might be feeding her too much. But that wasn’t the case.

The next thing I knew, I just saw three little feet popping up from underneath her belly,” she recalled.

Bun Bun had been pregnant all along, and overnight, Mathilda’s household had grown.

Despite the unexpected turn, Mathilda was thrilled. “I felt so proud,” she said. “I was really happy just looking at them.

As the tiny babies grew into lively little bunnies, Mathilda’s love for them deepened. Caring for four rabbits wasn’t easy, but her bond with them only grew stronger.

The experience sparked a new passion.

Having these bunnies in my life has made me want to foster more rescue bunnies in the future,” Mathilda said. “And even start a rescue.”

Maybe one day, that dream will come true.
