The veterinary staff explained that he was at the lowest possible body condition score a dog could have.
Severe starvation had left him with only 14 pounds on his small frame, when a dog his age should have weighed nearly 30. At just one year old, it was clear he had never experienced proper care.
“Travolta has been receiving round-the-clock care in our veterinary ward since his arrival and we are doing everything we can to save him,” the KHS team shared on Facebook.
In addition to extreme malnourishment, he suffered from pressure sores, a painful infection along his right side, and even maggots crawling over his body.
The vets believed Travolta had been left in this state for weeks. With no one to help him, his survival depended entirely on the moment that driver decided to call for aid.
Step By Step Toward Healing
Dr. Bewley, who led Travolta’s medical team, refused to leave his side. The first days were critical, and he required constant monitoring.
He was placed on a strict feeding schedule, receiving medication and small, frequent meals to help him gain weight safely.
The goal was simple but vital: rebuild his strength so he could one day walk on his own again. And after only a few days, Travolta surprised everyone by taking his first wobbly steps.
The sight brought joy to the entire clinic. Watching this fragile pup rise to his feet, paws that had once been too sore to stand on, gave everyone hope.
“We are over the moon to see this handsome boy become mobile and start showing us a little more of his personality,” the KHS team wrote under the video.
From then on, progress came steadily. Though recovery meant long nights and tireless work, Travolta was finally moving forward, and nothing could stop him.
From Foster To Forever
Touched by his determination, Dr. Bewley offered to foster Travolta once he was strong enough to leave the clinic. She welcomed him into her Kentucky home, already shared with several rescue dogs.
For Travolta, the adjustment was almost instant. Having grown so attached to his favorite vet, he felt safe by her side.
At last, the playful pup hidden beneath his suffering began to emerge. Travolta filled the house with energy, mischief, and love, quickly becoming the star of the family.
It didn’t take long for Dr. Bewley to realize the truth: Travolta wasn’t just a foster. He belonged with her permanently.
