Oregon Foster Dad Turns Fear Into Joy For Pit Bull Who Meets His New Pack

When Lee Asher, a lifelong dog rescuer and the founder of The Asher House in Oregon, drove to Wild Rivers Animal Rescue, he couldn’t have predicted that one meeting would touch his heart so deeply.

A staff member led him down the rows of kennels until they reached Sammy. The Pit Bull’s tail began wagging furiously, and his face broke into a wide smile. It was as if Sammy knew right then and there that his life was about to take a turn for the better.

The dog had suffered abuse and neglect and ended up in a high-euthanasia shelter. By the time he was taken in by Wild Rivers, he was in rough shape, recovering from surgery and still carrying both physical and emotional scars.

Despite his sweet nature, Sammy had been ignored by potential adopters time after time. With his chances running out, he was scheduled to be put down.

Fortunately, Wild Rivers intervened and gave him another shot at life.

From the moment Lee met him, he knew Sammy needed to be part of his sanctuary. He bent down, kissed Sammy gently, and promised him that things would never be the same again.

Sammy hesitated at first, uncertain whether to trust this new human. But once they were in the car, Lee wrapped him in affection, trying to ease his fears.

Before heading home, Lee stopped at a dog bakery so Sammy could choose his very first toys and treats. For a dog who had known only hardship, the experience was magical. Sammy’s joy was clear, and Lee’s heart swelled at seeing him so happy.

Once they arrived in Estacada, Oregon, Sammy was introduced to Lee’s pack of nine dogs. To Lee’s delight, they welcomed him instantly, as though he had always been part of the family.

Showing Him The Beauty Of Life

Lee wanted Sammy to discover the joys he had missed out on for so long.

“I wanted to show him an adventure while I had him. So our first stop was the beach. He absolutely loved it. It was beautiful,” Lee recalled.

Sammy sprinted across the sand, his face beaming as the waves splashed nearby.

“It was like right after the beach he was a completely different dog. He let his guard down and he really started to trust me,” Lee explained.

From that day forward, Sammy showered his foster dad with kisses. He joined the pack on hikes, sniffed the fresh mountain air, and relished every new adventure. For the first time in his life, he was free to run, explore, and simply enjoy being a dog.

The Realization He Was Already Home

At first, Lee believed he was simply fostering Sammy until the right family came along. But as days turned into weeks, something became clear: Sammy was already home.

“I just really wanted him to feel love, feel security, feel safe and by doing that he and I, we have built a really special bond. And he gets along with the pack so well, so this bond can’t be broken and I guess he’s been home this entire time because we’re gonna keep him,” said Lee.

Sammy became more than just another rescue. He was Lee’s heart dog, the one who made him laugh more than anyone else and who held a unique place in his soul.

When Sammy first joined the pack, he was battling heartworm. Lee stayed by his side through treatments until he was declared negative. Sadly, not long after, Sammy began suffering seizures.

Lee never gave up. He took Sammy to countless vet visits, adjusted his care, and continued to surround him with love.

A Goodbye Filled With Love

Years later, Sammy crossed the rainbow bridge while resting in Lee’s arms. Saying goodbye was devastating, but Lee found comfort in knowing that Sammy’s final chapter was filled with joy, safety, and family.

Though his time on Earth was far too short, Sammy left behind an enduring legacy of love and resilience. From a broken, overlooked dog in a shelter to a cherished family member who knew only kindness in his final years, Sammy’s story is one that continues to inspire animal lovers everywhere.

Lee often reflects on how much Sammy taught him. Despite all the pain he endured, Sammy greeted life with hope and happiness once he was given the chance.

The Asher House remains a sanctuary where countless other dogs find safety, but Sammy’s memory will always shine especially bright. For Lee and his pack, he was not just another

rescue, he was family.
