Service Dog School Dropout From Colorado Finds His True Purpose Helping His Mom Every Day

Leo has always had his own personality, and that has brought plenty of joy to those around him. But one thing he never quite managed to do was officially become a service dog.

This lovable English Lab “failed” his training program because, as his mom puts it, “the standards were too high.” The trainers also quickly realized that Leo preferred using his intelligence for his own benefit rather than following strict rules.

Even so, his story is far from sad. Today, Leo has found his true calling—being a loyal “service” dog to his mom, just in his own unique way.

Leo spent two years in the Paws for Purple Hearts program, a California-based service dog training school. When it became clear he wasn’t going to graduate, he found his forever home with Samantha Welborn.

Despite his “flunk,” many of his lessons stuck with him. Now, Leo puts them to use daily, although sometimes with a twist.

His favorite “job” is helping Sam get ready for walks. He runs around gathering items like socks, shoes, and bits of clothing, proudly bringing them to her as if to speed up the process.

“I adopted him when he didn’t pass service dog school, he loves to bring me my things when he wants a walk,” Sam wrote in a video.

Sometimes Leo grabs things he probably shouldn’t, but that’s part of his charm. Sam knows how bright he is and accepts that he occasionally bends the rules for his own goals.

If he doesn’t feel like helping, he’ll flop down and pretend to nap (though his half-open eyes usually give him away). When he does want something, though, he has no problem convincing his mom.

A Loyal Helper In His Own Way

Quirks aside, Sam adores every bit of Leo’s personality. She knows how clever and emotionally tuned-in he is, and she treasures his one-of-a-kind way of showing it.

“Leo might have flunked out of service dog school, but he’s still the smartest dog I know,” Sam shared on TikTok.

The two share plenty of adventures together, often heading out to hike mountain trails or go on long walks.

“Leo is the best adventure buddy,” Sam wrote in another TikTok post.

When they’re not outdoors exploring, they enjoy relaxing together at their Colorado home. Leo is also Sam’s emotional-support dog, stepping in whenever she feels stressed or down to make her smile again.

He may never have earned the official title of service dog, but in Sam’s heart, Leo is exactly that. He is always by her side, always ready to help in the way only he can.
